The ever alluring Jennifer Lopez falls, romantically, and quite literally, Matthew McConaughey looks confused, yet, hot... I knew what #TheWeddingPlanner was, there is no logic, but there is wonder in how it remembers the way a man might hold your broken heel as if it were glass.
In all honesty, the supporting cast has no depth, the plot is dependent on convenience, the emotional arcs are barely planned... and yet, #TheWeddingPlanner holds so much heart, a strange, almost accidental kind of heart that stumbles into enjoyment, and sometimes that is enough.
That disorientation of Matthew McConaughey becomes a kind of flirtation, and I almost believed him, beautifully mirroring the disbelief from Jennifer Lopez that a soul may actually notice her. Their chemistry is odd, but that is part of the appeal of #TheWeddingPlanner, it works.
Matthew McConaughey looks lost, not emotionally, but like he wandered into the wrong set with cheap blond hair dye and never left, and yet, infinite charm... in the way only a man in tiny glasses can be. With no idea what genre #TheWeddingPlanner is in... he is strangely perfect.
Beneath that control of #TheWeddingPlanner standing on business, is a woman longing to be seen. There is something ethereal in the way Jennifer Lopez carries that ache, this is not a woman in love, but a girl terrified of what that love may eviscerate, her career... or her heart.
There is no nuance in what I am about to say, but Jennifer Lopez is so goddamn fine... and yet, so much more, holding this celestial ability to paint a longing so visceral, an almost invisible grief, #TheWeddingPlanner who forged a life planning the joy of others and not her own.
To find comfort in the predictable is a strange feeling... #TheWeddingPlanner may not challenge, sometimes comfort just needs to be felt, a film planned for late afternoons and low expectations, and yet, I smiled, and in the logic of romantic comedies, that counts as love. ⭐⭐⭐
