Just like Gainsborough's masterpieces, the gardens at his house are flourishing and more beautiful than ever. A tranquil escape steeped in history. 🌷

In 1780, he painted the portraits of King George III, and Queen Charlotte. He remained the royal family's favorite painter even though painter Joseph Reynolds was Principal.

In the 1780s, he used a device called a "showbox" to compose landscapes and display them backlit on glass. As he aged, he returned to painting landscapes in full. The showbox sounds similar to a lightbox we use now.

While he may not have enjoyed painting them as much, he certainly knew what he was doing.

Gainsborough loved to play the viol da gamba, seen here. As you can see, it is similar to a cello or viola. At one time, it is said that he had five of these instruments and played often.

Even though his popularity and income increased painting portraits, he was very vocal about his love of landscapes. He complained so much that he was seen as grumpy by his contemporaries.

Anne Thistlewaite Stanhope was the wife of Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield, which made her the Countess of Chesterfield. She appears lost in thought as she sits with her left arm resting on a balustrade of a terrace, while a stairway behind her leads down into the garden. Dense foliage furnishes a backdrop for her figure, while the right half of the painting provides a distant, unobstructed view of her green forests and lands.

A pale beige shawl trimmed with gold fringe wraps loosely around her back and shoulders, and dainty white slippers emerge from underneath her elaborate sky blue and cream satin gown. Her distinctively tall and fashionable upswept light brown hair plus the low-cut gown reveal the graceful curve of her smooth neck and breast.

Anne was the daughter of the Reverend Robert Thistlewayte of Southwick Park, Hampshire, who came from that region's gentry. She married Stanhope in 1777 and this painting was begun the same year. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the following year.

Among Thomas Gainsborough's many portraits of English aristocrats, this extremely large painting stands out as a remarkably loose and freely painted example. He conveyed a sense of immediacy in the large sweeping brushstrokes used to describe material, foliage, and background sky. Short, curved brushstrokes form the tree trunk, while longer strokes of blue and white paint create an illusion of shimmering, rustling fabric. Small dabs of white and gold paint applied to the shawl lend it a rich, glimmering effect.
