Here we see the cleaning of vacuum chambers for the Super Proton Synchrotron, the second-largest machine in CERN’s accelerator complex. Today, it serves as an acceleration stepping stone between the Proton Synchrotron and the #LHC.

That summer, Leon Van Hove (CERN’s Director General at that time) kicked off the traditional annual relay race, a tradition that still takes place to this day #AtCERN.
