Beech trees are native to the UK but are present in many parts of the world. Although they are well-known for thriving on chalk and limestone downland, beech can experience lime-induced chlorosis on calcareous soils . As shallow-rooted trees, they may suffer dieback or even die during drought years. For me, as a woodland photographer, they are always a reliable tree to shoot with the soft light that bounces off their smooth bark, and they can make interesting compositions.
