There’s a sharp double knock at the door, knuckles against steel. Legato goes utterly still. He knows who it is. “Bluesummers.” Elendira calls his name in the same way a child at play says ready or not, here I come. Melodic and merciless. “Open up.” No. No, he’s not finished. Blood has soaked into his sleeves. He sucks the damp fabric into his mouth, distraught. There’s no possible way to consume all of it but what’s the alternative? This is his angel’s body, his angel’s blood. It cannot be discarded. “You’re not killing yourself in there are you? I’d hate to interrupt.” Of course he isn’t. He can’t. Not when Knives still has use for him. “Hello?” Elendira knocks again, impatient. “Are you already dead, or what?” “Or what,” Legato murmurs.

That’s really festive.” Legato has leaned one shoulder against the kitchen doorway. He’s wearing a white sweater with a minimalist design of little black skulls connected to each other by a thin line that swoops across the collar and cuffs to evoke string lights. “Thank you,” Legato says. He lifts a hand, crooking his fingers as if manipulating invisible threads. “I made it myself.”

In the aftermath of what should have been the end of the world, an angel digs his nails into the bruised flesh over his most devoted servant’s heart. They slip past the brain stem, flutter in the mess of gray and white matter, coil around a crumpled unwelcome thing. They push it out with a revulsive squelch.
