After my parents died, I wanted almost nothing of their possessions, save for a German ceramic plate— a painted scene of forest glade and chalet-like house, its second floor of mortar and timber complete with thatched roof sitting atop a barn-like foundation. Falsely romantic sure, but as a child,

the plate taught me how one thing can stand in for another—that plate became our weekly Sunday drives to look at country houses far removed from our north Jersey 50 x 100 suburban lot, houses of course we could never afford, no matter how many jobs my father worked.
