Van Gogh escribió a su hermano Theo sobre la vista desde su habitación en Nieuw-Amsterdam, Drenthe : «Ahora tengo una habitación bastante grande donde se ha colocado una estufa, y donde hay un pequeño balcón. Desde allí puedo ver incluso el páramo con las cabañas. También contemplo un puente levadizo muy curioso». En la carta dibujó un boceto del puente, que se convirtió en la acuarela « Puente levadizo en Nieuw-Amsterdam ». La obra fue una de las 148 acuarelas realizadas por Van Gogh, quien dijo sobre trabajar en esa técnica en 1881: Qué espléndida es la acuarela para expresar atmósfera y distancia, de modo que la figura está rodeada de aire y puede respirar en él, por así decirlo. "Puente levadizo en Nieuw-Amsterdam" del famoso pintor Vincent van Gogh. Fue pintada en noviembre de 1883. Es una acuarela, a diferencia de muchas de sus obras más famosas que son al óleo, representa un puente levadizo en Nieuw-Amsterdam, situado en la provincia de Drenthe en los Países Bajos. La obra original se encuentra en el Groninger Museum en Groningen, Países Bajos.
