The madness of the wide world has caused me to drift away from good habits into bad. Too many exercise skip days, too few walks. Too many late nights spent in front of the television instead of in bed with a book by 9pm. Too much time spent sedentary and brooding instead of active and creating. But time is an endless succession of moments and in each we can make a decision: left or right, up or down, forward or back. I took such an opportunity first thing today and decided to spend just this day shutting out the noise and refocusing. I hope another such day will follow tomorrow, but for now I concentrate on the present moment. The oppressive heat of summer still pounds down here in Brooklyn. Rain brings no relief, but instead leaves the air thicker and more stagnant. Low-flying, cobweb clouds covered the distant Verrazano Bridge as I slogged through my early walk this morning, my thoughts cast back longingly to the recently departed May and its precious temperateness.
