🌙 Walking at night? Wear bright colors or reflective gear to help drivers see you. #WalkSafe
🚧 Construction areas = danger zones. Stick to sidewalks and marked detours. #WalkSafe #KnowYourRoute
Seattle sidewalks are for feet & paws—not scooters and bikes. 🚫🦶🐾
It’s time to make our streets safe again for everyone.
📢 Sign the petition to ban sidewalk riding & demand better enforcement.

This is what I think about when being a pedestrian nears cars. #walksafe messaging about reflective clothing, no headphones, etc does nothing to protect me from these driver errors.

Poster on a lamppost. Poster reads: We’ve made it so that automobiles can go everywhere at the expense of children going anywhere.
I wonder if 1950s style #walksafe messaging would have prevented this.
They braked hard and apologized, but I mean, come on, keep an eye out for pedestrians when you're pulling into a parking lot, for fuck's sake. You already think you own the roads, now you want the sidewalks as well? Jeezus, #YYJ #YYJtraffic #WalkSafe #YYJWalk

Local journalists report on concerns about the very 1950’s #walkSafe #Ptbo campaign.
Should appear soon here: peterboroughcurrents.ca/transportati...

“Putting the onus on pedestrians is not the right way to do it,” Pamela Fuselli, CEO of injury prevention charity Parachute Canada said. She said streets should be designed in a way that allows pedestrians to “make a mistake and not be killed for it.”
#walkSafe #Ptbo
The #Ptbo police, city, county #walkSafe campaign includes:
• Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing: Choose clothing in bright colors (such as neon or white) or wear reflective gear, especially if walking during low-light conditions (dawn, dusk, or night) or inclement weather conditions.
And yet…
Sign up now for the next edition of CycleNews from the Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee which will address the #walkSafe campaign.

@globalnews.ca has reported on the #Ptbo #walkSafe campaign and I appreciate the journalist Marc Woodhouse dug a little deeper and also reported that #calmStreetPtbo, actual design changes, has been suspended.
To be clear, there is nothing “New” here.
Been posting about this over the last few days. Articles & newsletters in the works about how design is the way to keep vulnerable users safe.
#walkSafe campaign is an old trope wherein “We ask everyone outside of the car to be safe so that drivers can be dangerous.” @tomflood.bsky.social
Peterborough trades spending on road safety for #WalkSafe messaging, the usual "shared responsibility"
globalnews.ca/video/110753...
Could a #walkSafe campaign also address the supper dark tinted window issue? There are cars driving around #Ptbo with windows so tinted that I, a pedestrian / cyclist, can’t make eye contact.
That’s a safety threat to me. I assume it’s another unenforced infraction, like casual speeding and idling
You’ve seen me posting a lot about #walksafe #Ptbo in the last days. I encourage you to read this thread and replies.
Design vs Safety
The goal is less death and injury of vulnerable road users. But freedom too!
#walksafe will be gold star awarded by status quo to themselves. No real change.
Worth noting that the 7 suggestions for drivers in the #walksafe campaign doesn’t use the term distracted driving. www.peterborough.ca/en/news/walk...
“And there are groups of people … who are called vulnerable road users in law. And what that means is they're particularly vulnerable in case of a collision with a motor vehicle. So, motorists have an enhanced responsibility to take care of those people.”
In #Ptbo we just got handed #walksafe 🤦♂️
