A view of a warp-weighted loom with weaving in progress. The loom ismade of wood, the weaving is a natural linen. An overhead lamp shines down on the weaving.
Detail view of my hand holding the selvedge of the cloth at the fell line.
This is a canvas weave (a form of plain weave). The filling is a singles tow linen that passes over warp pairs (in this project, the wefy os #4 towgarn, warp is a commercial 20/2 linen). This image shows the top of the weaving, from the starting border down about 8 inches of woven cloth. In the first several inches of the weaving, you can see how I was struggling to come up with the most effective sequence of weft picks, placement, and beating in, and how the quality of the weaving improves (a little!) in the several inches of weaving at the bottom of the frame.
In the closed shed, beating up the weft with a wooden weaving sword.
Linen sailcloth weaving. Truth: my favorite part of weaving is setting up the loom; all the hours of filling a web -- not so much. Have to devise little tricks for myself to stay at the loom.
