Eastern Gray Squirrel Early this morning I was at the kitchen window, checking whether the birds had settled back into their routine after I fitted baffles to the feeders over the weekend. The baffles are meant to stop the squirrels raiding the black oil sunflower seed — a small, ongoing battle I seem to be losing. I wasn’t really in photography mode. I was just looking. Then, at the tree line beyond the fence, I spotted something. Low light, gloomy sky, my vision still catching up with the morning. It looked crow-sized. I reached for the Fujifilm X-T3 with the XF 150–600mm and took a look. Not a bird. A squirrel, hunched on a branch, working through whatever it had found. What I ended up with isn’t a dramatic wildlife shot. It’s a grey morning, bare winter branches layered against a flat sky, and one squirrel doing what squirrels do. The squirrel is almost lost in the frame. The darkness, the tangle of branches, the muted tones — it all held together in a way that felt considered, even though it wasn’t planned at all. The mood did the work. And I think that’s what I like about it. The baffles, for what it’s worth, appear to be working. ### Like this: Like Loading...
