On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in a garment factory near Washington Square in New York City's Greenwich Village. Dozens of workers were trapped by flames, a collapsed fire escape and a locked door. Workers began leaping and tumbling to their deaths on the sidewalk.
Other workers perished in the flames, plunged into an open elevator shaft, or fell from the fire escape. 146 workers, most of them immigrant young women and girls, perished.
Today we honor the workers killed in the 1911 Triangle factory fire and continue to stand with workers fighting for social and economic justice today. We are honored to have buried several of the women and girls in Workers Circle cemeteries.
Today, March 25, 2026 is the 115th Anniversary of the deadly 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. 146 workers were killed in the disaster. Learn more about the fire by going here: rememberthetrianglefire.org
