(Manis pentadactyla)
The pangolin, or scaly anteater, is the only mammal that is covered from head to toe in keratin scales, similar to human fingernails. The animal's defense mechanism is rolling up into an impenetrable, armor-like ball when threatened, enabling it to withstand the jaws of large feline predators.
However, this same defense mechanism makes capture by humans very easy.

This dynamic mask of the gelede type depicts two hunters wrestling with a pangolin (or scaly anteater), representing the struggle between civilization and nature, human intelligence and animal force. The figures are shown grabbing the mammal by its back legs but also seem to be losing their balance and giving the pangolin a chance to escape. The dramatic tension of this mask's upper section presents a sharp contrast to the serene human face below.”

World Pangolin Day 2026: Why This ‘Walking Pinecone’ Is the Most Heavily Trafficked Animal on Earth Discover why pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals and how saving them protects forests, farms, and our planet.

"Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked wild mammals on Earth, despite full international trade bans. Their natural defense -curling into a ball- works against predators but makes them tragically easy targets for poachers."

A side-by-side composite photograph featuring wildlife conservationist Kelsey Prediger on the left and a ground pangolin on the right, framed together with a warm savanna background. On the left, Kelsey Prediger, a woman with long light pink hair, smiles brightly at the camera while sitting in tall golden grass during late afternoon light. She wears a light blue/green button-up shirt, blue jeans, and holds a compact trail camera or monitoring device in both hands. On the right, a ground pangolin (scaly anteater) is captured in a natural walking pose on dry, earthy ground, its body covered in large overlapping tan-brown scales, small head lowered, long tongue slightly extended, and powerful clawed forelimbs visible. The image highlights Kelsey's work in pangolin conservation, with the animal appearing alert and characteristic of its shy, nocturnal nature in the African bushveld.
