#writerscoffeeclub 3 have you studied writing?
I attended a few tech writing courses, and they did help to give structure and approach. I also watched a bunch of YouTube videos that helped pick publishing platforms.
Mainly, the courses underlined that the world is stuffed solid with literary […]
#WritersCoffeeClub 3 April: Have you studied writing? Did it prepare you, or did you learn more by doing?
I read a couple of books that were specifically about learning how to write. But as with all things in life, I learned more by doing.
#WritersCoffeeClub 3/4: Have you studied writing? Did it prepare you, or did you learn more by doing?
The only formal writing course I ever did was one week on ‘writing for outdoor magazines’. It was useful in terms of understanding that particular market…

Have you studied writing? Did it prepare you, or did you learn more by doing?
Not "writing" in particular, but I did have an academic career (including a PhD), which did influence my writing style.
My love of footnotes comes partially from that, and partially from […]
#writerscoffeeclub 3 have you studied writing?
I had a course in technical writing. I don't remember if it taught me anything.

3: Have you studied writing?
Only by reading. I was an English major for a year in 77-78. I flunked out, mostly becausae I prefered partying to going to class. It didn't help that I was assigned the Odyssey, which I had read three times before I was 12.

Such a weird article from a so-called #writer #author - maybe using #LLM #AI #GenAI has already fried his brain!

#WritersCoffeeClub 2 April: Visual presentation: how do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary form?
I sometimes use whitespace consciously in poetry, but I don’t really for my novels. Except maybe with header alignment.
I’m rather oblivious when it comes to typography 😅
#WritersCoffeeClub Apr 2: Visual presentation: how do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary form?
In non-fiction, typography for code or examples can be jarring, and illustrations can get into the way.
#WritersCoffeeClub Apr 2: Visual presentation: how do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary form?
People won't read your book if it gives them a headache the instant they look at the page.

Visual presentation: how do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary form?
I don't do anything fancy with them (or haven't yet). For my paperbacks, I did what I could not to violate expected layout conventions. You open it, and it looks like a […]
#WritersCoffeeClub April 2: Visual presentation: how do white space and typography become meaningful elements of literary form?
There is the whole business of paragraph length, which affects flow.
Personally, I take it further and use white space for speciall effect. Indent poetry. Variable […]

What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
I have one plot that I keep meandering around. I hope to get back to it sometime soon.

#WritersCoffeeClub Apr 1: What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
One main plot per viewpoint character (and even those are related), maybe a B plot for each of those.

#WritersCoffeeClub 1 April: What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
Plots? We don't need no steenking plots!
I'm writing non-fiction: I need themes, and not too many of them. Plus a way to distinguish them, so I don't befuddle the […]
#WritersCoffeeClub 1 April: What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
I'm is so much trouble. My book has... let's call it parallel universes. There are two versions of every character. But, there is only really one plot.
The main […]
#WritersCoffeeClub 01 April: What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
What do you take me for? I do not plot. Plotting is for supervillains. I am a Chaotic Pantser.

What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
For the 2 novels where I knew what I was doing, something like 7-point story structure per major character (intro, turn1, ramp1, midpoint, ramp2, turn2, resolution) […]

#WritersCoffeeClub – 1st Apr. What arrangement of plots do you have? No plot? Only one? A main plot and a side plot? Something else?
I have multiple arcs that I try to have wrapped up by the end of a series. And a major advancement at the end of each volume.
I don't use any formal method like […]

Lots!
•For my upcoming book, I got very kind endorsements from peers, and a positive review from Kirkus.
•I reread my draft for the next in this series and liked it. (Not always true!)
Eager to get back to work.

First maintenance change in my pro-bono project. It's a "living document" like a looseleaf ... you'll notice my blog is at leafless.ca (:-))
#WritersCoffeeClub 31 March: What are we celebrating regarding your writing this month?
So far, all the celebration is going on backstage. Mrs. Cleyton’s release is due in 2 days.
But for one thing, the pre-release book tour in Brighton was a success 😅
#WritersCoffeeClub 31/3: What are we celebrating regarding your writing this month?
