She thought back to her school days And what she's learned there, in the classroom And what she's had to learn on her own Some memories came back She recalled the slave trade The genocides, the wars, and the failures Much of the everything Things people said were "long ago" It wasn't "long ago" To her, it was 30 minutes ago Knowing history made her more upset It wasn't "long ago" No, how could it be "long ago"? The patterns are reoccurring And some things just never left (just painted with a different shade) Images of the past Interpsersed with goings of the present They didn't know And, thus, they replicate the patterns Those who did, as she could see, Actively tried to deny it Keeping things the same in another shade An ugly truth Some things never left And the patterns were reoccurring It wasn't "long ago" Some things she's learned in the classroom And some things on her own It may as well have been 30 minutes ago
A poem written about history's nasty habit.
