I don’t know how to overcome that sense of betrayal except for possibly building my own community, but then the fear lies in becoming the source of betrayal myself.

I don’t want to become what I loathe most. #xJW

For years I bought into the narrative that I wasn’t missing out on birthdays as a JW kid bc of these special parties my mom would throw for me (as long as I brought home straight As on my report cards).

Everyone else got to celebrate merely existing. I had to earn the right to celebrate. #xJW

Two things can be true at once.

I was so happy to see my friend surrounded by so many of her friends and family on her birthday.

I was also sad for myself, never having celebrated a single birthday with my parents and knowing they’ll never be there to celebrate my son’s birthdays either. #xJW

I feel this in my bones. I have no words of solace or encouragement but I can and will say that I have the utmost respect for the self-respect, dignity, grace, and love you showed in every facet of this interaction. Kudos, sister, and much love from a fellow #xjw with an all too similar story.

She listened to me for the first time in her life and she cried and asked for forgiveness. I hugged her and said “I love you and I forgive you but I’m leaving now.”

So I left.

And now I’m free.
