I was not expecting a radish this big. I feel better about my decision not to buy a daikon radish at the grocery store for the bibimbap recipe I'm trying.

The beets did grow after all. I planted them while there was still snow last spring. I basically gave up on them this summer. We've had snow and it's below or close to freezing every night now.

I ate one of my acorn squash today. I was glad it was actually mature when I cut it open and not still a baby.

A refrigerator with several jars of pickles.

Shutdown project day 7: quick pickles. I don't know what all the hype is about lemon cucumbers. Not great for pickles as they tend to have a very soft seedy center. Not great for snacking as advertised since they have extra thick spines and I need to peel them.

I also picked the basil and an acorn squash that seemed ready. I'm gambling with the rest of the winter squash because they need more time. I dug up 3 of the pepper plants to try and overwinter them.

We've got a freeze watch tonight. Picked all the peppers, cucumbers, and one tomato. Still need to pull the green tomatoes. Going to leave the beets, kohlrabi, herbs, lettuce, peas, and winter squash since we're only forecast for 37°F.

I grew some stuff and then I made a purple stew (whip, whip, whip, whip). Ok, really it's a soup.

It's getting cool enough in the evenings for soup. Thankful for the north and south American indigenous seed keepers that made this meal possible.

The annual tomato massacre has happened. Nights are getting cooler and first frost doesn't seem so distant. In fact two friends outside of town already had frost pockets and lost their basil.

I still can't get over how much easier it is to garden one USDA zone warmer. I've gotten so many peppers and there are more in there. Though the chickens let me know the cage is not chicken proof last night and ate a few peppers.

Our average first frost is September 23 and in theory could be as early as September 10. I just watered the garden in shorts and a t-shirt though.

A small brownish red pepper, 2 tomatoes, and a knife on a wooden cutting board.

My first chocolate pepper. As advertised, it tastes just like a regular bell pepper. I was so worried I planted too much. Over the winter I'll build up in ground beds of compost so Next year I can plant 3 or 4 times as much.

At least I grew a kohlrabi. We are about to go trillions of dollars in debt and lose even more services. The least I can do is grow and eat my veggies. #zone5gardening #compostthepatriarchy

I’ll be picking it all before the hard freeze, but I’m still impressed that I’m harvesting outdoor lettuce in late November. Wild.
