The purpose of the house is not exactly known but it is believed to have provided accommodation for canal workers as well as a high vantage point from which canal workings could be monitored.

The grade II listed bridge and house were built in 1778 over and adjacent to the Stroudwater Navigation. The Canal was designed to link the River Severn to Stroud for the passage of coal to power the Stroud Valley textile mills.
