🌳 Orchard meadows are becoming increasingly fragmented each year, and with them, we lose one of Europe’s most species-rich habitats for birds, insects, and wildflowers.
This Friday, April 24th, join us in celebrating #EuropeanOrchardDay and explore these vital landscapes!

1 #seabird, a whole selection of names given to them around Britain & Ireland where 96% of the world population of Manx #Shearwater breed. They have no natural defence against invasive predators & have already disappeared from many islands when rats invaded - #biosecurity helps protect them.

🧪🌏🦑🦉 Meet the Cassin’s Auklet! These #seabirds spend most of their lives at sea but return to the #FarallonIslands to breed. We spotted the first Cassin’s eggs on 3/29, and peak lay has occurred over the last 10 days–a surprise given concerns about marine heatwaves and El Niño conditions!
Bad news for the Raccoon, but this is a good example of the efficiency of the APHA rapid removal process for animals on the 'Species Alerts' list, to prevent those forming the greatest ecological/economic threats from getting established.

The graphic displays four images of Puffins showcasing the different recording units for them on SMP surveys. These are IND (individuals on land at the colony), AOB (apparently occupied burrows), SEA (individuals on the sea adjacent to the colony), and AIR (individuals flying over the colony).
Puffin colony count surveys are recommended from April 30th. Multiple survey methods and recording units can be used to monitor them. Take a look at the graphic below to visualise the different units! ⬇️ #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social
