We are very honoured. To everyone in HOS who has helped us in any way in recent years, we thank you for making us the best that we can be.
Marking the award, Juliet Vickery, Chief Executive of the BTO, particularly highlighted HOS’s work with young people, and its determination to increase female involvement alongside excellent fieldwork.
HOS team members have been in London this week to receive a national award recognising excellence in local ornithology. Every year the Marsh Charitable Trust and the British Trust for Ornithology select a local organisation to receive the distinction based on their achievements.
Bonaparte's Gull (centre) accompanied by Black-headed Gulls
I was about to give up in the miserable weather on Saturday when I noticed an unusually large roost of gulls on Keyhaven Lagoon. Persistence led to patch gold - Bonaparte's Gull! Appears to be the 1st for the reserve. #patchbirding #ukbirding #hantsbirds
The latest sightings for May are now on the HOS website

Hi Chris, yes it is - during the summer large numbers of Med Gulls come inland to feed over farmland and downland sites. The peak is usually in mid to late June. Three figure counts are not uncommon

It’s looking good this year for Ringed Plovers on Hayling Is in our enclosure. We’ve now found 5 nests and yesterday had our first chicks, the earliest by about 3 weeks since we started the project. Fingers crossed they’ll fledge!! @rspb.bsky.social @wordsfromwez.bsky.social @btoengland.bsky.social
Fantastic new tower at HIWWT Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve to encourage nesting #swifts and house martins! 🙌 👏 💚
