Pitching a Novel Idea Something was wrong with my novel pitch. Although my initial hook felt right, it wasn’t expressing the my work's essence in a captivating way. It needed reworking. And fast.

Pitching a Novel Idea

Something was wrong with my novel pitch. Although my initial hook felt right, it wasn’t expressing the my work's essence in a captivating way. It needed reworking. And fast.

A Black Forest Ride Me on Justin, ready for a ride in the Black Forest. Clop, clop, clop, clop, Justin’s relaxed four-beat gait, the walk. We’re on a two-track path in the southernmost reaches of the Black Forest. It’s a lazy September Saturday, warm but seasonally free of deer and horse flies and their nasty bites; biting flies don’t just go for horseflesh. The forest air is a touch too cool.

I’ve ridden past Jägern, solo in their ladder stands, guns in camouflaged laps. We don’t acknowledge each other.

A new musing is up for the month of April, "A Black Forest Ride." Enjoy!

A horse and rider in a stableyard. The horse is a tall brown and white warmblood in English tack. The rider is dressed for a casual hack.

Israeli forces murdered 15 paramedics & ambulance/civil defence workers in Gaza & buried the bodies alongside their wrecked emergency vehicles.

The UK govt is supporting, arming & militarily assisting Israel to commit these war crimes.

Ma présentation a été annulée par l’Université de New York Mon «alma mater» a préféré jouer de surobéissance préventive pour ne pas froisser le gouvernement Trump.

Former MSF President Joanne Liu's presentation at NYU was cancelled because it showed the data on the number of aid workers killed around the world, the highest number being in Gaza. This was considered antisemitic. I should be surprised and shocked, but I'm not.

i drop this when people are prone to click through to outrage bait in the nyt.

1—DON’T. that’ll make it the best performing piece of the day.

2—you don’t need to read it; jesse singal is a bigot who, like nyt, worked hard to foment this attack on trans kids

3—the nyt has always been like this

I watched Adolescence last week so now my news feed is partly articles about the filming of it -- which is fascinating -- and partly by editorials from The Spectator furiously leaping through all sorts of hoops to explain that toxic masculinity is not a (or the) problem.

A quote from the book 'A Brief History of the End of the Fucking World':
"...a habitual scammer with a severe conscience deficit and a low regard for the feelings of poultry, she had been inspired to stick doomsday eggs up a hen’s arse by another apocalyptic prophet..."

going to post a largely out-of-context quote from my book every day until it's out

(if you would like the context, here is how to get, at least, some of it linktr.ee/endofthefcki...)

Promotional image for the book "A Brief History of the End of the Fucking World". It says "The End is nigh" above a picture of the hardback book and the title, followed by the release date: "February 27, 2025“.

It then helpfully clarifies that "That's the book's release date, not the end of the world. Hopefully."

My new book is out in two weeks.

It's about the past and future of the apocalypse - how we've spent thousands years of history believing that history wouldn't be around much longer.

You can buy it here: linktr.ee/endofthefcki... Pre-orders, if course, help enormously with the algorithm gods.

Katie this account, among others, is blocked by the very good content scrapers block list - bsky.app/profile/cont... and I'd encourage folks to use that list to deny these folks attention

Is this the world's first kowhai moth detecting cat?!? I'm collecting larvae at home to rear at the lab for an ecology project. Pepper helps find the ones that drop to the ground. #entomology #predatorfreenz #kowhai #bugs #catswithjobs #indoorcat

Golf courses can be safe havens for wildlife and beacons of biodiversity Managed well, golf courses can bring nature back to our cities. Here’s how to balance the good and bad for urban biodiversity.

This is changing in Aotearoa-NZ as well - but macrocarpa is the most common tree on golf courses - we need to switch to planting natives for biodiversity outcomes

Colour photo, mainly of clear unblemished bright blue sky. In the lower right hand corner is a small sunlit slice of the very top of white flat-roofed marble building, with some crenellation-style ornaments on the front and a line of cormorants perched on the roof above mirroring the decorations. Above it, about halfway up the frame a seagull soaring, seen from below so a black shadow, but with the leading edge of its outstretched wings just catching the sunlight.
