I'm so uncomfortable with this excitement around a parakeet who went 'willingly' underwater in a small 'submarine'. Birds' tolerance for adventure surely varies but I have to wonder, is there genuine comprehension and consent here, and what risky precedent is set. #birds #pets #ethics #animalethics

Agree.
The book cover is bright pink with a central image of a marble-like statue of a person whose hand is lifting up a garment to show a thigh.

The photo shows an editor's note from today's print version of the NY Times Book Review. It explains, naming name and date of review, a freelance writer's failure to remove material from his review that he imported from another newspaper using an AI tool.
The book critic's "reliance on AI and his use of unattributed work by another writer are a clear violation of The Times's standards." Wow. Do though of us who never (ever) use AI in our actual writing need to band together? Out ourselves? Is there a #IdontuseAItowrite group? #AI #writing #writers
Oh well, we’re safe from robots taking our jobs for now.

Looking ahead, anticipating- as I do this next novel by Eric LaRocca- is a very best feeling of being in #writingcommunity.
My review of Miriam Horn's magnificent biography of wildlife biologist and conservation scientist George Schaller from @penguinpress.bsky.social is up @science.org #wildlifebiology #conservation #primates #booksky #bookcritic 🧪
Horrific and lethal domestic violence here in Virginia by former lt. gov., who then died by suicide, all with teenage children in the home at the time. A woman has been murdered, and my heart goes out as well to the surviving family. #domesticviolence #violenceagainstwomen #mentalhealth #Virginia
Yes they burrow in!
Hurray for feral cats! We love them (cared for them many years locally). We would need many cams for a large area - it would take a wildlife intern to set up and then coordinate analysis! I wish it could happen.
Box turtles stay in a really small area and don't migrate- so we are super lucky and see them for three seasons!
My new book comes out next year. Please watch this space!
Hello after.... decades?! Thank you for connecting here!
Truly you spoke with remarkable punch and power. I spoke at TED-Vancouver in '19 and doing so extended my public reach so much, it's been amazing.
A box turtle, I believe a male because of eye color, proceeds slowly through stubby green grass with two yellow flowers visible. His head and neck are orange and black, and his shell is a duller yellower and black.
One of my favorite days each year comes in spring, with my first sighting of a box turtle in our yard. Yesterday was the day and he's glorious. [I keep photographic records now as I try to work out how many long-term turtle residents we have in the yard.] #turtles #boxturtle #wildlife #nature
Dr. Veliz speaks on stage wearing a red jacket and black pants.
Amazing talk at TED conference Vancouver by @carissaveliz.bsky.social on AI predictions that we must see clearly in service of power, of tech riches, and most definitely of injustice. Don't obey! #AI #ethics #TED
Wonderful observations-- 'A unique “choreography” between two ant species suggests a distinctive partnership in which one provides a carwash service to the other.' Research by Mark Moffett, scicomm by @alexaroblesgil.bsky.social #ants #insects #entomology #nature #ecology 🧪
Looks like a lot of people want an AI-free online experience.
This is my shocked face.

The cover features a dark, remote rocky and treed landscape -- and a blurb from Carmen Maria Machado saying the novel is 'a masterpiece.'

Pro-tip for the Swalwell campaign staff now maligning the women accusing their boss of sexual misconduct: it's not worth it. There will be other campaigns and other candidates but there will never be another time that you won't regret behaving this way towards survivors.

The book cover features a pastel-colored natural landscape and a superb review quote from the New York Times.

Oh, thanks!
I'm with Helen DeWitt here. This writing prize mandates so much intense promotion, a level not every writer welcomes. As I see it, it's a rigidity bordering on outright ableism. #writing #writingcommunity #ableism #Bluesky #books #HelenDeWitt n
