Manzanitas (Ericaceae: Arctostaphylos spp.) are commonly found in arid shrublands and woodlands of western North America. Made up of dozens of species, these woody plants grow as bushes or small trees. Once pollinated the pink flowers become red fruit. Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 19 May 2016.

I love that hahah
I already loved plants but it was more of a hobby and didn’t get really into botany until I moved to Lexington to attend UK. But I’ve found community here, and a career path that will likely take me away from here but maybe back to WI at some point. Funny how things work :)

It does! I just finished the book yesterday and it was wonderful. I’m born and raised in the Midwest, in Wisconsin, and just went back to visit a week and a half ago. We spent time in the central sand hills region botanizing and birdwatching (mostly for whooping cranes!!), so that book speaks to me

I’ve been having fun making some native container gardens and growing more carnivorous plants (they’ll get more sun as soon as I move in a few weeks!!)

Getting into botany has fundamentally changed me as a person and the way I view the world and esp my home state. I have so much more excitement for the world

Just finished Braiding Sweetgrass this morning, after working my way through it the last 6 months or so. I’m about to start Sand County Almanac, just before my trip back home to Wisconsin. I’m excited to start my conversations with that book 💗

I can add you too our GC on IG if you want! I’d highly recommend Ida. Also I’m in WI this week and might be heading up to Tanya’s for a photoshoot at some point so if you wanted a trimmings lesson I could come out for that :)

It’s technically not like you can just walk in though so you’d likely have to have a good reason
