The cartwheel was first visualized ~70 years ago in the symbiont Trichonympha in the wood termite gut. We’ve discovered the cartwheel’s secret: a unique zigzag stacking of SAS-6 tetramers that facilitates the iconic 9-fold symmetry of cilia.

Graph of receptor binding curves showing an ancestral and recent H5N1. The ancestral virus does not bind NeuGc receptor well, whereas the recent virus birds NeuGc and NeuAc containing receptors equally.
Really excited to be able to share our latest preprint, describing how during its evolution in cattle, H5N1 has got better at using a type of alternative receptor that's abundant in cows, but not found in humans and birds.

Structural biology is in an era of dynamics & assemblies but turning raw experimental data into atomic models at scale remains challenging. @minhuanli.bsky.social and I present ROCKET🚀: an AlphaFold augmentation that integrates crystallographic and cryoEM/ET data with room for more! 1/14.
Excited to share our work on the structure and function of cytoplasmic lattices within mouse embryos. A collaborative effort with @niakanlab.bsky.social and work led by @kashishsingh.bsky.social and @inaharasimov.bsky.social . It is now out on BioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
I am extremely excited that my first first-author paper from my PhD is finally out 😆!! We developed a new CLEM workflow to measure lipid densities at the nanoscale. So if you are into lipids and super-resolution imaging approaches, this one is for you: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Registration is open for the FASEB Virus Structure & Assembly meeting!
Join us for exciting sessions on pandemic viruses, virus structure and replication, antiviral and bacteriophage therapies, and cutting-edge technologies. Short talks will be selected from submitted abstracts.

Great day at NYSBC, thanks for having me! 😊 If anyone wants to try out the tutorial, here it is:

There are linked videos for each step in the PDF, or I have also prepared the whole thing as a .PPT with embedded videos (2.7GB):

We're excited to announce the beta-release of #RELION-5.1! 🥳 This release has important updates on our #amyloid processing pipeline, as described in this preprint: doi.org/10.64898/202... There are also some tweaks for #teamtomo.
#OpenSoftwareAcceleratesScience
started using --𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚_𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝟑 in RELION5 Refine3D and all of a sudden every subtomogram average goes to high resolution 🤯

I enjoyed reading the four challenging aspects you summarized. I think it’s well covered and well thought! Thank you for this review.
Figure 1. Cryo-EM of abundant protein complexes in native membranes.
Figure 2. Cryo-EM of membrane proteins in vesicles.
Figure 3. 3D reconstruction of V-ATPase in native synaptic vesicle membranes.
Figure 4. Generation of membrane vesicles for structure determination of proteins in their native lipid bilayer.
I've written a review on what I think is an extremely exciting direction in cryo-EM:
Cryo-EM of endogenous membrane proteins in their native lipid bilayer

Check out this beautiful study, spearheaded by Kenny @denkenny.bsky.social, on mitochondrial remodeling. Some of the prettiest organelle segmentations I have seen 😍😍😍

We found a viral Trojan Horse: a virus can hide inside another virus. This one surprised us: deltaviruses don’t just borrow a helper virus. They can travel inside it.
A literal Trojan Horse “virus-in-a-virus” route into cells. 🤯 Kudos to 1st author @viroscope.bsky.social and co-authors !
Amazing work from Clay @kosonocky.bsky.social, Alex Abel and LEAH labs, and all the collaborators and participants in the Bits2Binders AI CAR-T therapy protein design competition. The results are in!

Cryo-EM structures of prefusion HSV-2 gB in complex with human antibodies.
Our fourth installment on prefusion herpesvirus gB proteins is available as a preprint: doi.org/10.64898/202.... Working with Ivelin Georgiev's group, we isolated and characterized prefusion-specific HSV gB antibodies from humans!
Our work on HIV-1 matrix, led by James Stacey and @dhrebik.bsky.social, is in this week's @nature.com. Extended explanatory video from @margotriggi.bsky.social.

High-resolution in situ structures of hantavirus glycoprotein tetramers pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41763200/ #cryoEM
Our latest preprint is now available doi.org/10.1101/2025...! Led by my postdoc, Luqiang Guo @luqiang.bsky.social, we determined a ~2.4 A resolution structure of the hantavirus glycoprotein tetramer on the surface of VLPs. Also determined structures of dimers of tetramers and Fab-bound tetramers.
Please spread the word: the Structural Studies Division @mrclmb.bsky.social is looking for a new tenure-track, independent group leader with an exciting plan in any area of Structural (Molecular & Cell) biology, in discovery biology and/or methods development. 🥳

Congratulations Kelly! And enjoy the holiday!
Long in the making, but happy to present the Chlamydomonas chlororibosome!
Cryo-ET🔬reveals a large new domain on the small subunit, built from multiple extensions in conserved ribosomal proteins.
bioRxiv 📖: shorturl.at/q44tG
This suggests greater chlororibosome diversity than expected!

Not something you see in textbooks very often: tripolar mitosis.
Very happy to say that our work on how axonemes are generated is now available on bioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... - if you’ve ever wondered how the incredibly beautiful, complex structures within motile #cilia are constructed then this is for you!
Am I the only one increasingly annoyed by cryo-EM papers not showing *any* experimental density in figures? Sometimes not even in the supplementary material??
@erwright73.bsky.social Welcome the Wright Lab to Bluesky! #Tomo
