Illustration of a Common Nighthawk on the wing at sunset over dark purple and bright orange clouds. It turns in flight and opens its wide mouth to try and nab a moth out of the air. It is a brown mottled bird with lots of black and white speckling and barring, and two broad white bands near the tips of the wings.

‘About time they got some credit’: why hoverflies are an underappreciated insect Prof Dave Goulson is one of the world’s foremost experts on insects. But there’s a special place in his heart for hoverflies, one of the prettiest flies around. Here he explains why we should nominate...

Totally agree with @davegoulson.bsky.social in @theguardian.com
here obviously.
A fabulous insect group with extraordinary skills, diversity, importance in our ecosystem and food, and also very beautiful.. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A macro photo of a small fly inside a yellow flower. The fly, which is pale colored and has vivid, almost day-glo green eyes, is facing mostly forward. A close look reveals that it is holding a clear droplet of nectar in its mouth, almost as big as one of its eyes. Many flies and bees hold droplets out in the air like this, to help evaporate some of the water and concentrate the nectar.

Friday #Flyday! Why is this pretty little fruit fly (family Tephritidae) blowing bubbles? Does it just like playing with its food? No, it's concentrating the nectar by sucking the droplet in and out to evaporate some of the water. Lots of nectar-feeding flies and bees do this. 🐙🌿📷 #insects 🫧
