“Her*story” is a wordplay on the English word “history.” The pronoun “his” (his/his) happens to be part of the word. If you replace that “his” with “hers,” you point out that historiography has traditionally told almost only the male perspective. So “herstory” is essentially a neologism meaning “women’s history.” In reality, historiography is not only very male‑dominated but also class‑biased (focused on a particular social class) and overwhelmingly white. Almost all people who were neither privileged nor male have been deliberately “forgotten“. Between HER and STORY you also find the gender asterisk (*), which signals that discrimination occurs in many overlapping ways (see, for example, intersectional feminism for further research).
