To reduce disease, we all need to make some urgent but simple changes to how we feed our garden birds.

Ongoing farmland bird monitoring this morning showed the importance of providing food during the hunger gap.
All except one Yellohammer this were young birds. After a long winter, this period is critical for 1st year survival.

Work took me to RSPB Arne today and got a very big dose of spring! Singing Dartford Warblers, Crossbills and Firecrest. A few Red Kites passing through overhead and a Sand Martin did the same. Best though was an Orange Underwing. Not a moth I see that often and usually in tops of birch!

Because of the ongoing rapid decline & persistent reports of disturbance we have taken the difficult decision this week to add Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers in the UK to the long list of eBird sensitive species support.ebird.org/en/support/s... despite the cost to the science of #Ornithology #UKBirding

Checking up on local nest box cameras the other day I came across something I have not seen before in ~30 years of monitoring barn owl boxes....a tawny owl in a box with a pair of barn owls! Thankfully a couple of days later the barn owls were still present and the tawny owl had moved on.

Someone reported it from Lodmoor by mistake so Birdguides was just correcting that record.

Now and the next 4 weeks are the very best time of year to find Willow Tits, which are paired and defending territories. They're at their most vocal and obvious until the leaves come out. Report all certain sightings to county recorder and @birdtrack.bsky.social to help monitor remaining populations

Last night we fitted new tracking tech to Jack Snipe @StaffsWildlife Cuckoo Bank.
The tags are Cellular Tracking Tech (CTT) and enable us to get live movements as they go.
A big thanks to @pulsarvisionukroi.bsky.social who sponsored our first tag.
This is a huge step for this species and us.

Just a very pale Common Buzzard. That's very typical buzzard behaviour. Not something harriers tend to do.

A European storm petrel nesting among rocks in Mousa, Shetland.

The RSPB is looking for surveyors to census the UK’s largest Storm Petrel colony on Mousa, Shetland.

We need 2-4 volunteers who are comfortable working and camping in a remote location with limited facilities, to help complete playback surveys during mid-July 2026. 🪺🏝️🏕️

Petition: Stop the Guga Hunt Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to amend Section 16 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to remove the power to grant licences for taking Gannets on Sula Sgeir.

Please help to end the senseless harvesting of Gannets. It’s a ‘tradition’ that needs stopping.

Please sign the petition which is already over 80,000 and I’m told the highest signed petition ever for a Scottish Parliament petition.
