I knew right away what the symbol was... of course I am a plant nerd and know my native plants of Oregon and the state flower, Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium). The leaves gave it away. I love that they chose this for Oregon.

So sad to learn of the passing of Moya Brennan of Clannad. For me, her singing was the bridge between the old traditions of Irish music and something new and vibrant as contemporary sounds and influences came into it.

A gorgeous Argiope sp. spider waits for a meal. The zigzags in the web are called stabilimenta and reflect UV light. The stabilimenta may help attract prey to the web and/or also prevent larger animals from destroying the web.
