New paper just out deciphering the global species–area relationship for plants with @biogeokreft.bsky.social @patrickweigelt.bsky.social and others in @pnas.org
Across islands area alone explains 66% of variation in richness best described by a classic power-law model

Thrilled to see the first #PhD chapter by @annaroennfeldt.bsky.social published in @natcomms.nature.com. This multi-region comparison shows that lack of #niche conservatism in #non-native #plants might be transient and potentially linked to dispersal limitations. doi.org/10.1038/s414...

New in @pnas.org we assess future #climate exposure for 32,089 species of #trees🌳
🔹69% face unprecedented climates in ≥10% of range
🔹In taiga & Amazonia >50% of local tree diversity exposed
🔹 31% of species retain >90% of range in stable climates -> important climate refugia♨️

The NLP pipeline used for the prediction of categorical and numerical traits based on textual species descriptions. The description first goes through a preprocessing pipeline and then enters the categorical machine learning (ML) pipeline (violet), categorical deep learning (DL) pipeline (blue), and numerical DL pipeline (green). Within the corresponding pipelines, the description is further preprocessed if necessary and then tokenized and transformed into a vector embedding. Finally, the vector embedding is put into the corresponding model head and the model returns a prediction with an associated confidence score.

showing stream in foreground, flanked by lush, green flourishing trees in front of mountains in background which are grey-brown and show a much harsher environment. The interplay of environmental conditions and geographical barriers such as mountains and lakes determine where plants thrive – an international study shows how these patterns have developed over millions of years. Why do some plants thrive in specific regions but not in others?
