An endless carpet of Mertensia with its lovely blue bell-shaped blooms and some palmate Geranium foliage in front.
Enjoy this very deceptive picture of city’s finest Mertensia virginica bloom (with a bit of Geranium thrown in) cropped to hide that it is nonsensically not in a quiet woodland but a sunny ugly apartment building with dyed red mulch, invasive ditch lilies, vinca & weeds.🤣

What gives things value is human labor, so AI products and services have an inherent problem: they are close to valueless. What would you pay for an AI film or AI therapy session? To be profitable, AI must enable theft (wars for oil), scams (flexible pricing), and civilian control (so AI continues).

Exes at Sacramento Bee owner McClatchy are using their human reporters’ bylines on AI slop without reporters’ consent.
Readers won’t know what’s real and what’s fabricated. That’s not journalism. That’s corporate organized fraud.
Unions for Sac Bee, Miami Herald & Kansas City Star are suing. 🧵

RIGHT TO READ DAY. April 20, 2026. Everywhere. FOR YOUR FREEDOM TO READ. FOR ACCESS TO INFORMATION. FOR UNDERSTANDING OUR PAST. FOR OUR COMMUNITIES. FOR OUR LIBRARIES. Logos for Unite Against Book Bans and ALA150 American Library Association
From Jan. 2025 - March 2026, 100+ pro-censorship bills were introduced in state legislatures. At least 40 bills would penalize libraries and library workers with lawsuits, fines, or even jail time for protecting people’s the right to read.

Feels kinda silly to say that rich people from the center to left of things politically can’t build a successful media environment when the onion is doing it basically using donations from semi-employed forum goblins

Can't tell from my photo, but this is an extremely narrow side yard, so I can see why they'd try it out. I need to go back next year to see what happened.

A night flash photo of a blooming Sacred Datura plant. On the one hand, the image reminds you the plant is in the potato family. On the other hand, it looks beautifully threatening.
I avoid toxic plants, but maybe I could make it work...

A Sacred Datura plant about three feet tall emerges from a sea of greenery. Its leaves are huge; a couple have been snacked on. Long cylindrical flower buds the size of a hand are forming in the center of the plant.
During the #CaliforniaNativePlants garden tour this past weekend I most coveted the Sacred Datura. Even before blooming it has a fantastic presence. Photos usually show it growing alone, but rising up out of a sea of plants it's even better, like an iceberg about to hit the Titanic. 🌱

I may misunderstand the Critical Threats Project's mission, but this isn't analysis, it's opinion. The USA continues to attack and sink boats off the coast of Venezuela. The effect on Iranian strategy? Perhaps "We'll respect international waters when the USA does"? Analysis in a vacuum is useless.

A typical dandelion plant with low leafy foliage around the base, but the whole thing is the size of a tulip. The flowers are bright yellow. Half have progressed to fluffy seedheads.
California Dandelion, Agoseris grandiflora. Surprisingly large and whimsical. This is the last in a photo series taken during a local native plants garden tour. 🌱 #californianativeplants

The type I've grown is native:

But I agree this looks like the non-native Yellow Achillea.

Numerous cheerful daisy like flowers amid green foliage. They are bright yellow with delicate white edges.
Today I learned Wide Throated Yellow Monkeyflower exists. 🌱 #californianativeplants

A California native plants garden with a small pond water feature. About 20 plant species are visible, including Meadowfoam, large clumping grasses, California poppies, and just before them are several Sacred Datura plants about to overwhelm us with their massive perfumed flowers.
Experiencing severe California native plant garden envy right now. Alisma Leaved Buttercup is growing in the pond. 🌱 #californianativeplants
