As everyone can attest that has studied or read about their surprisingly complex life cycle, Rusts are mind-blowing organisms, and I love them for it. Probably one of the fungal groups I find most fascinating.

Ah, you mean on the first picture? No, that's just the wood of a broken twig.

You're welcome!

Could you provide the scientific name as well? It would be nice to be able to look up the fungus as a non-japanese person. (mushroom common names do not work very well in online translation.)

You cannot see singular hyphae on your pictures. Those are rhizines. They are, of course, made up of hyphae, but every part of the lichen mycobiont is.

The only fireworks display I need tonight is the explosion of colour that is Sarcoscypha austriaca.

Here is a picture of mine with fresh material that shows how similar the three continental European species really are.

Cuphophyllud flavipes is btw very rare and should not be collected for consumption. As with many fungi, I do not even know for sure if they are edible or not. Usually, edibility is my least concern, as I'm more interested in identification and biology.

Yes, you hear a lot of bad advice about mushroom edibility. But it's very simple: You only eat the species you know to be edible. This is the only rule of thumb that works.

You can touch fly agaric without problems. You can touch (not eat!) every mushroom without problems, but especially fly agarics. They are toxic, but not nearly as toxic as people assume.

It seems like you're not used to spend time in nature. Field biologists do get their hands dirty while collecting mushrooms, plants or other organisms.
