First Swift of the year this morning at Portland Bill. Also female Redstart and Swallows flying in. Not enough time for a proper look around today but nice to see Guillemots and Razorbills close in rather than flying fast far out at sea! I haven't posted anything about it for a while, but I'm still plodding on with writing and illustrating my Birds of Eyebrook Reservoir book with a view to hopefully publishing next year. Here are a few more illustrations from it. #art #WildlifeArt #birds #UKBirding

After just missing them yesterday, I managed to catch up with the Marshside adult Little Gulls this afternoon on my way back home from a trip out. They showed really well, often flying low over the water and their dark underwing was clearly visible- lovely

A good morning birding at Marshside. Female Scaup, good views of Water Pipit, Spoonbill plus Pink Feet, Avocets and summer plumage Goldies - always lovely. My first Wheatear this year too. No sign of the GW Teal tho and I left before the Little Gulls arrived! #lancsbirding

Three paintings, each showing two warblers. One Willow Warbler and five Chiffchaffs in total. Each bird faces right to left.

Getting there. Need a few adjustments, and text adding on a computer, but here are 5 Chiffchaffs and one Willow Warbler. #birds #ukbirding #sciart #birdart

Last week, I finally caught up with the influx of Russian White-Fronted Geese, travelling to the Fylde to take in the amazing numbers there. We saw a minimum of 270 in 2 large Pink Feet flocks, and quite a few Barnacles too rounding off a great goose day! Video by Pete Scholes (with permission).

Great views of the Ring-necked Duck on a late afternoon visit to Martin Mere yesterday, it quickly moved away when the swan feed started though. The Glossy Ibis was feeding in the grassy field just outside the reserve, along with 31 Cattle Egrets and a Little Egret, when we left.

2/2 Was nice to see 5 Black Necked Grebe too but no sign of the Great Northern Diver, or the Greater Scaup yesterday. Amongst the masses of Tufties, Pochard, Wigeon and Shoveller were also were 2m and 4f Goldeneye. A beautiful morning, but as windy as ever, hence the shakey pic!

The long-staying Lesser Scaup at Staines eventually showed yesterday, but not before we scanned c1000 Tufted Ducks! Happily, it relocated close-in allowing us to see the peak at the back of its head before putting its head under its wing. A life tick for me @jim-rose.bsky.social 1/2
