This morning I came across a Red Mason Bee (Osmia bicornis) foraging on the blue blooms of grape hyacinth on my balcony. The bee's striking appearance, a dense, glowing orange-ginger coat covering most of her body, with darker legs and wings, is one of the most eye-catching sights an April garden has to offer. Wild solitary bees like the Red Mason Bee are remarkably efficient pollinators, in some studies shown to be far more effective per individual than honeybees. These small bees carry great ecological importance, essential threads in the fabric of healthy ecosystems, supporting plant diversity, food chains, and ultimately the landscapes that make spring so visually rich.
