photo of full six panel screen and its gallery label on display at museum
“Goshawk Mews

Japanese
Edo period, 1615-1868
Ink, color, and gold on paper; mounted as a six-fold screen
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas J. Cooper, 1978-122-1
As falconry became increasingly popular among the courtiers and military elite in Japan, artists began to picture falcons and hawks more frequently, finding that the birds' association with the ruling class made them into easily recognizable symbols of power and status.
This screen, made around 1675, is unusual in depicting the mews (enclosure) that houses these birds of prey as they are raised and trained for hunting.”

they are one of my favourites. I wish they were more common where I live currently. their barred flight feathers are so striking with their rich red breast.
good morning Richard, I hope you will have a wonderful day.

Northern hawk-owl caught a mouse. With some raptors I have been collecting frames in top of each other. It is so interesting to see how all the details (position of head and wings) in every frame are changing.

no, this is a red-tailed hawk Buteo jamaicensis. peregrines have dark eyes, dark hood markings, notable bare skin around the eyes, and a structure in the nostril. this bird has bright eyes, a belly band and clear breast, and a short brown tail with narrow dark bands.

Rock Kestrel (Falco rupicolus) hover-hunting over a patch of fynbos on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. A small falcon species, common in this area, always nice to see. Goes after small rodents, lizards, large insects, etc.

Red-tailed hawk. This is another capture of the same hawk I posted a few days ago - the one that needed a napkin.

It feels weird for us to call them “Black-headed” gulls. They always have white winter plumage when they come to Japan. Actually, their Japanese name is ユリカモメ(Yurikamome), which means “Lily Gull”

Bluesky is an awesome place where you can acquire a lot of heron knowledge.

日本語だと白いサギも青いサギも黒いサギもみんな一律サギだけど、英語だと白いサギはEgret、その他のサギはHeronって明確に違う名詞になってるの面白いねって話でした。

Thank you for following everyone, I've just reached 20,000, which is mad! 😀🙏
Bluesky is brilliant, it's like Twitter used to be back in the day.. but it will change.
We've seen this with every social media that gets big unfortunately.
In the meantime, here's a male Kestrel. 😍🐦

I recommend the app iNaturalist! It has a computer vision trained by identifiers and there is a community that will add identifications to your photos so they can be used for research.

Little Owls
It's a wonderful thing to have Little Owls in the garden, especially in the early summer when there are owlets about.
You pop out to bring the washing in and find owlets everywhere - even (literally) caught on camera...

Bald Eagle. Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

This is an immature bald eagle, about 2.5 years old. It takes 4.5-5.5 years to reach definitive adult plumage.
