We have been sharing the power of counting by unit fractions. Different variations of this task are available in Rethinking Fractions (Pearson) and www.fractionslearningpathways.ca. This short video shows counting to determine a quantity as well as in a classroom. #fractions #pearsoned #ontariomath

It is always important to know the research behind the practice. We have created short summaries of key tips for educators - informed by the literature reviews. #fractions #mathematics @pearsoneducation.bsky.social
We had such a great time presenting at the OAME Annual Conference last month! There were many points of discussion raised - sharing some thinking about decimal conversions here. #mathematics #fractions
Excited to be sharing our learning! To register to join virtually: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... #fractions @pearsoneducation.bsky.social #maths
Just a quick shout out to the HDSB educators who joined us yesterday morning for the first of a 3 session book club. Great engagement! @pearsoneducation.bsky.social #fractions #math #onted

Two text book images. One, from 1910, shows stacked ribbons partitioned into various unit fractions. Students select values for the numerator using one of the denominators and identify equivalent fractions. The second image, from 1942, is more direct with a large amount of text telling students about equivalent fractions and then presents a rule.
Two different textbook images from about 30 years apart. Interesting to consider the learning within the context of social and world events. #maths #iteachmath #mathsky
So… on a number line like this I know you could mark the number 0.5 and you could mark where the number ½ is, but where would you mark 50%? Or does 50% not fit on a number line?

We just finished up a book study in an Ontario school board. The staff was amazing and the learning was powerful. Keep fractions learning going all year with punctuated instruction. #mathchat #iteachmath #mathsky
Wishing everyone a restful and joyful holiday!
I should say when viewed in smaller scale.
Beautiful!!! It is interesting how the rhombusescreates a circular image.
These tiles are beautiful. What math do you see? Would you change the way they are arranged? #edusky #iteachmath #maths
I see density.

Tips to move beyond a “lurker” (and/or start to interact with the Online Math Community) Like - Who benefits: You (it acts like a bookmark) & the Poster (“Yay someone liked what I said”) Repost - Who benefits: You (it acts like a bookmark), the Poster (“Wow, they liked enough to share it”) & the rest of us (Reposting sends it back to the top of the feed increasing the chance of your followers and their followers to see it) Comment - Who benefits: You (interaction brings more friends and knowledge), the Poster (the conversation they started continues) & us (entices us to become part of the conversation too) Post - Who benefits: You (sharing thoughts and resources help to hone your own ideas) & Everyone else (the more discussion, the higher the chance we all learn) Tips for making your Posts more visible: Add an image - including a visual has been shown to increase the interaction Include hashtags (not too many) - a hashtag categorizes your Post and makes it visible to a wider audience than just your followers. Here are some math related hashtags that relate to education: #MathChat #MathsChat #MTBoS #iTeachMath #ElemMathChat #MathArt #MathSky Tag some people (not too many) - you can tag relevant people (even those who don’t follow you) in the Post or in the Image to increase the conversation potential
The #math community seems to be growing here and becoming more active. I have presented on how to get the most of being in a community like this many times and here are my tips to grow this PLN and make it useful for educators.
Bonus Tip - Use the Feeds:

Number lines (of all sizes-on the floor, paper, wall) and relational rods are also very powerful.
Our research has revealed some simple yet powerful shifts in instruction that improve student understanding of fractions as quantities. #math #mathematics #fractions
We know students will see circles in early grades but hope that the models used for fractions are number lines, rectangles/ribbons and sets. The first models tend to stick with the students and circles are limited in terms of use. Enjoying the learning!
Glad you enjoyed it! We hope that the number line replaces the circle in early fractions learning. Thank you so much for taking time out of your weekend to join us 🙂
Wow! What a dynamic and energetic group of educators in today's session. Missed it? Watch the recording at Making Math Moments.
