A medium-close portrait of John Waters sitting with his arms crossed in front of a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf.
He wears a blazer featuring a vibrant green and white botanical leaf print, layered over a black turtleneck.
Wishing a very happy 80th birthday to the genius filth maestro himself, John Waters! 💋 🎞️ 💜🦩Which of his perverse cinematic pleasures will you be enjoying today? You can watch our edition of MULTIPLE MANIACS on the Criterion Channel alongside Waters’ fabulous episode of ADVENTURES IN MOVIEGOING!

A brownish-pinkish songbird (male purple finch) is on an upper perch of a tubular birdfeeder, leaning down and to the right toward a yellow and black songbird (male american goldfinch) who is on a lower perch and is looking up at the other bird. Both birds have their beaks open as they exchange "pleasantries" with each other.
I don't normally post more than one #BirdOfTheDay photo, but I saw this at my feeder just this morning and I thought I'd share. For the #FeederFriends theme (birds you might see at your feeder), Mr. Purple Finch and Mr. American Goldfinch are exchanging some "friendly" words.

Not sure if any of you gardeners save your own seed 🌱? We do, we made a seed cleaner/sorter to assist.
Maybe it would be interesting to see it working...
£1.67 to make. (we're from Yorkshire) a spare piece of greenhouse glass and some Beech from tables that a local restaurant was throwing out.

Famed mountaineer Jim Whittaker, first American atop Mount Everest, dies at 97 | Cascadia Daily News
Longtime Port Townsend resident inspired generations of alpinists, defined an active NW outdoor lifestyle
Extraordinary obituary of one of the PNW players (along with Fred Beckey, of course, and his twin brother Lou) who put U.S. mountaineering on the map—Seattle native "Big Jim" Whittaker, the first American to summit Everest.
What a life. www.cascadiadaily.com/2026/apr/08/...

Photo of a lichen with a powdery green body growing over soil (soil not visible under lichen). From the green surface grow several dozen thin greenish stalks with tiny pom pom tops. The photo background is blue sky.
A Pin Lichen. Northwest Territories, Canada. The little stalks are about 1cm high. #lichen #fungi #fungifriends

NO KINGS PDX events Saturday 3/28
March starts 10AM from Oregon Convention Center to main gathering at Oregon Battleship in Waterfront Park at 12. Then loop around PDX.
The whole day needs many volunteer bike corkers to protect people along the route.

As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.

I photographed her over the weekend in a small village green on the edge of Oxford. Last year we had quite a few of them nesting in our garden lawn🪴

You can't simply replant a forest and restore what was removed. You can have new trees, but the biodiversity will forever be changed. We have so few of these spaces left and need to save them.

They are tenacious plants! I fully cut mine back 2-3 times a year before they go to seed. Also like to spread if left alone.
