One. It’s dancing with itself because it’s got nothing to lose and nothing to prove.

Another PhD! Huge congratulations to Dr. @margestelzner.bsky.social!!!! She completed a fantastic dissertation defense yesterday. We are all really proud!
The beautiful scrolled edges of unfurling ‘Dixie Wood Fern’ highlighted by wide flat foliage of other plants behind it.
The simpler but more textured shorter structure of unfurling Ostrich Fern sparkling next to a clump of Phlox divaricata with its purple blooms & star-shaped clusters of new buds.
#NativePlants fern season is on. Dryopteris hybrid ‘Dixie Wood Fern’ is shapely, matures quite large, & tolerates drier soil which makes it good for back row of Hosta garden closest to house. Plus classic Matteuccia struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern).

Congratulations and welcome to Hopkins!!
Friday was my last day at NHGRI. After 10 wonderful years, my lab is headed to Johns Hopkins University

Cluster of small white flowers
Happy spring Monday to the #NativePlants 🌱 feed. My Black Chokeberries (Aronia melanocarpa) are now in full bloom. I love the delicate white flowers on these, but also really like the glossiness on the leaves!
Same! Mine are still waiting!
Left to right: Fuzzy Phacelia, Phacelia hirsuta; Perfumeballs, Gaillardia suavis with a furrow bee; Annual Winecups, Callirhoe leiocarpa with black Tiger Swallowtail; Western Daisy, Astranthium ciliatum with mining bee, Prairie Verbena, Glandularia bipinnatifida with Hoary Edge skipper, and Scarlet Cupleaf Beardtongue, Penstemon murrayanus with an Eastern Leaf-footed bug. Couldn't find a picture of the phacelia with a bug friend but it gets lots of teeny bees.
I finally have six native plants blooming for #SixonSaturday. #nativeplants #gardening 🌱

Giving out native plants at our Native Plant Extravaganza in Port Richmond’s Campbell Square Park!
We planted about 75 plugs and distributed an additional 75 to neighbors for their backyards and planters.
I have two huge mature trees that produce hundreds of walnuts each year (and four younger ones about a decade old that had first walnut last year). I wish I had something to do with them - they’re hard to crack open and use! If people have ideas/recipes - all ears :)
Drooping yellowish green flower clusters
Catkins all over my Black Walnut trees (Juglans nigra) right now. Nice profile on black walnuts, which are pretty amazing trees, here (host plants for over 100 🦋 species!!)

Right. So, just as easily as that came (via funder mandates), it could go away.
If the goal is just to have a version that can be freely accessed, funders could just require that a preprint is made available.

Officially out today! Long-running project, many thanks to give - in particular to my mentors & collaborators, the postbacs who worked so hard on each experiment, and the reviewers. If you love the amygdala, give it a read.

Excited to share the latest one from the lab led by José Solano @jolusolo.bsky.social who explored how early life #stress impacts the mouse 🐭 brain 🧠 vasculature
Science 🧪🔬 can be surprising & 2x stress can induce beneficial adaptations leading to resilience, phew!

My first R01 was ND. Didn’t know what ND stood for, asked someone and then was humiliated and sat in my car in the parking lot and cried. I remember trying to console myself. And the best I could come up with was - I could totally out party these people 😂
Reposting today since Bluesky was weird yesterday. Also for #fluorescencefriday image of green cilia on apical membranes of neural stem cells. See our new preprint for details! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Microscopy image of a section of human brain tissue at the level of the striatum with white matter fiber tracts outlined in bright green
And some love for the human 🧠 for #FluorescenceFriday. I like these zoom outs where you can see a whole structure - here, striatum. Green is MBP and outlining the white matter tracts, 🟣 is DRD1 and if you zoom in (see zooms in following posts) there is 🔴 for RXFP1 marking clusters of island cells.
Fluorescence microscopy image showing neurons virally labeled in red in a slice of mouse brain tissue at the level of the frontal cortex that are projecting to the ventral tegmental area
