New paper out! We studied how nutrient enrichment and catchment degradation affect fish communities in tropical Myanmar streams — and found surprisingly weak responses, suggesting fish are poor bio-indicators in these systems.

🚨Open call to all our early-career friends involved in collaborative/ECR-lead projects to join this interesting session at the upcoming ASLO-SIL meeting in Montreal 2026!
Hope to see many of you there 💦💙
The coming layoffs will inevitably affect the quality of our teaching, and we deeply regret the impact this will have on our students. The Study Board for Biological Sciences has articulated their concerns clearly in this opinion piece from UNIavisen.

The employees at the Dept. of Biology have decided to cancel the the planned meeting with the Rector.
The cancellation reflects the growing concern among staff at SCIENCE about the announced layoffs and the lack of genuine dialogue with university leadership.

🎉 Congratulations to Juan and Tobias for receiving the Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster Presentation awards at #ISPLORE2025JP! 🌱 Fantastic recognition of their excellent research and presentations — well deserved.
Thanks to @isplore.bsky.social for supporting early career researchers.
👏 Congratulations to Ole Pedersen on receiving the first Rens Voesenek Award at #ISPLORE2025JP! 🌱🌊
We are proud to see his work recognized by the @isplore.bsky.social community.
Beautifully engaging and Ted-talk worthy lecture by the first Rens Voesenek awardee Ole Pedersen at #ISPLORE2025JP 🌱🌊 Ole contributed significantly to our community, including all his work on oxygen dynamics in plants, especially in the field (and ocean!).
New paper in Hydrobiologia!
Lake Arresø shows how 50 yrs of nutrient management and sewage treatment cut Phosphorus inputs by 90% — yet eutrophication persists due to sediment resuspension. Real recovery will require reducing farm runoff further.

Fieldwork anywhere includes the risk of getting your feet wet! 🥾💧😉
Big welcome to Ema, our new Postdoc! He’ll spend the next 2 years with us on the CyaNoServices project, studying how effects of harmful cyanobacterial blooms ripple out from ponds to affect insects — and the ecosystems that depend on them.
His fieldwork spans Sweden, Spain, and Brazil 🌍
Great fun at the annual DHL Relay Run. This year's highlights:
🏃♂️Walking team beat last year’s time by 1 minute
👶Youngest participant in the history of our Lab
⏱️New personal best on the 5K
A wonderful evening of exercise, fun, and socializing outside the lab! 💚
Lab Clean-up Day done! ✅
Old samples were disposed of, lab is a lot tidier now, and our coffee machine has never been cleaner! ☕👌
All part of our LEAF Gold sustainability journey 🌿
Rounded off the day with an outdoor lunch with the rest of the BIO Department = perfect day! 😊💚

New in L&O: This study from South Greenland shows that lake & stream autotrophic biofilms are shaped by different drivers. With climate change, biomass may increase, reshaping Arctic food webs. Congrats to Sanne on her final PhD paper! 🌿 doi.org/10.1002/lno....

Our Freshwater Biology field courses wrapped up today 🌊 Students explored lakes & streams around Silkeborg, combining fieldwork, lab work & tradition at Salten Skov field station. A summer of science, teamwork & nature! #FreshwaterBiology #FieldCourse💚💦
🌾 Big kickoff in Kenya for our Danida-funded project on climate-smart, low-emission rice! Partners from Kenya, Tanzania, Philippines, and DK aim to boost drought resilience & reduce methane. More than a project—it’s a shared commitment to a better future. #RiceResearch #ClimateSmart #Danida
Science at altitude! 🏔💧
Bhumika and Dean joined colleagues from Kathmandu Uni for an unforgettable research trip to Nepal. The Carlsberg-funded “Mustang” project, the goal is to better understand freshwater biodiversity, water quality & human impact in this beautiful and understudied landscape.
🌿 Our lab is now LEAF Gold certified! 🥇
Thanks to teamwork, smarter protocols, and great coordination from our technicians, we have taken major steps toward sustainability.
Freshwater biology begins with fresh thinking 💧

🎓🌿 New MSc! Yesterday, Rikke Frederiksen defended her thesis on macroinvertebrates in ponds on former farmland. We’re proud to send off a talented and great colleague and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. 🌟 #MScDefense #FreshwaterEcology #NewTalent
🌊 Bubbles matter! 💨
This new paper wraps up Jonas Stage Sø’s PhD work and brings new insights into methane emissions from lakes. The conclusion is that ebullition from lakes often dwarfs diffusive flux — especially at higher temperatures.
