Many Glacier is often referred to as the Heart of the Park. This spectacular view is very similar to the Two Medicine Valley in that there is a dominant peak, in this case Grinnell Point, separating two valleys. To the right is the Swiftcurrent Valley and just up and over the wall in the background is Granite Park. To the left is the valley that leads up to Grinnell Glacier, one of the most popular trails in the park. The Many Glacier Hotel sits at the edge of Swiftcurrent Lake and is an outstanding example of the type of architecture that was so common in western national parks in early 1900. A walk through its soaring lobby is a must see when you visit Many Glacier.

The Middle Fork of the Flathead River forms the southwest border of Glacier National Park. This view, from near Park Headquarters, shows the river as it flows under the West Glacier bridge. At night some of the lights of West Glacier may be visible. During the summer, watch for rafters. Several commercial rafting businesses use this section of river. In the winter, the only activity along the river might be the occasional coyote or deer or a really cold kayaker.

This National Park Is Home to the 'American Alps'-With 500 Alpine Lakes, 300 Glaciers, and Stunning Waterfalls Chances are that of Washington’s three national parks, you’re probably familiar with two: Olympic National Park, on the state’s southwest coast, and Mount Rainier, some 75 miles southeast of Seattle. That lesser-known third park, meanwhile, lies just south of Washington’s border with Canada, more than a hundred miles from any major city. Of course, though, that just adds to the charms of North Cascades National Park, which encompasses more than 500,000 acres of pristine, glacier-fed lakes, alpine forests, and snow-capped mountain peaks. North Cascades National Park receives far fewer visitors than its southern counterparts, with just 47,000 entries in 2025 (for context, Olympic and Mount Rainier both see millions of visitors every year). People often overlook the North Cascades because of its ruggedness and isolation, but with a little time and effort, you can explore one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the lower 48, which is packed with 300 majestic glaciers and 500 Alpine lakes. In fact, its stunning mountain landscapes have earned it the nickname of the "American Alps." While the North Cascades remains a truly wild space among the nation’s recreational lands, its jaw-dropping scenery has begun to catch more people’s attention in recent years. “The...

Best Antarctica cruises for penguin sightings, glaciers and wildlife, according to U.S. News Antarctica stands apart even among remote destinations. The continent combines massive ice coverage, extreme elevation, and some of the harshest recorded temperatures on Earth. Conditions shape every aspect of travel here, from when ships can sail to where landings are possible. The visual experience defines the journey. Icebergs shift in color and scale, weather changes quickly, and wildlife appears in concentrated pockets across the landscape. Penguins, seabirds and marine mammals are central to the experience, often encountered during guided excursions along the Antarctic Peninsula. Reaching the continent is part of the process. Most itineraries involve crossing the Drake Passage, a stretch of water known for both calm and turbulent conditions. Once there, expedition ships navigate icy channels and remote landing sites that are otherwise inaccessible. The following seven Antarctica cruises, as highlighted by U.S. News & World Report, showcase a spectrum of ways to discover the region. Each offers a distinct approach—whether through extended itineraries or specialized wildlife journeys—building on the continent’s unique travel conditions. Credit: Atlas Ocean Voyages Atlas Ocean Voyages’ 11-night Ushuaia roundtrip prioritizes intimacy with both environment and wildlife through small, purpose-built expedition yachts. The World Traveller and World Navigator each carry fewer than 200 passengers. Both...

UPSC Mains Answer Practice GS 1: significance of glaciers and Swadeshi Movement | Week 148 “The Swadeshi Movement marked a decisive shift in the Indian national movement by introducing new methods of protest, promoting economic self-reliance, and broadening mass participation.” Discuss. QUESTION 1: Discuss the significance of glaciers in shaping physical geography and sustaining human life. Highlight the impact of glacier retreat due to climate change. Relevance: The question is linked with physical geography and human geography. It is also important for understanding Himalayan ecology and dependence of India on glacial-fed rivers. Aspirants should also focus on climate change and its impact on the glaciers. Note: This is not a model UPSC answer. It only provides you with a thought process which you may incorporate into the answers. Introduction: Story continues below this ad — Glaciers, which are essentially vast and thick slabs of ice created on land by the accumulation of snow over the years, hold around 70% of the world’s freshwater supplies. — While glaciers are relatively solitary settings, life thrives around them. Their meltwater sustains a diversity of freshwater systems, while newly exposed land from glacial retreat is ready for colonisation by pioneer species. Body: You may incorporate some of the following points in your answer: — Over time, these uncovered areas...

Argentina Reforms Glacier Protection Law Argentina’s President Javier Milei has taken steps to reform the country’s existing glacier protection law. In December, he sent a bill to the National Congress of Argentina that loosens environmental protections and opens the door for further mining and industrial activity in glacial and periglacial landscapes. On February 26, 2026, the Argentine Senate approved the bill, with 40 votes in favor, 31 opposed and one abstention. The other house of congress, the Chamber of Deputies, will discuss the change later this month, where it is likely to receive significant support, though its approval is not guaranteed. National Law 26.639, the Minimum Standards for the Preservation of Glaciers and the Periglacial Environmental Law, also known as the National Glacier Protection Law, was enacted in 2010. The environmental protection it provided glaciers was unprecedented. The law defined glaciers and periglacial landscapes—areas that undergo freezing and thawing, typically located on the edges of either past or present glaciated regions—as public assets and water reserves. Argentina has around 17,000 glaciers that feed watersheds and river flows. As crucial water reserves, these glaciers support the water supply for millions of Argentinians. However, despite the introduction of the law, a 2016 government report found 44 mining...

Hidden lakes beneath Greenland ice are speeding up glacier loss Greenland’s ice is melting faster than expected – and it’s not just because of rising temperatures. Hidden along the edges of the ice sheet, new lakes are quietly speeding up this process. These lakes may look calm, but research from the University of Leeds shows that they play a powerful role in how glaciers move and melt. Greenland ice melting faster Over the past few decades, Greenland has been losing ice at a very fast rate. Warmer air and ocean temperatures have caused about 264 gigatons of ice to melt every year since 2002. This has already raised global sea levels. Scientists at the University of Leeds studied the entire Greenland Ice Sheet to understand what is driving this change. Their research shows that meltwater lakes forming at glacier edges are becoming more common and larger over time. These lakes form as ice melts and reveals deep hollows in the land, which then fill with water. What are ice-marginal lakes As glaciers pull back, they expose bowl-shaped depressions. Meltwater quickly fills these spaces and creates ice-marginal lakes. Some of these lakes grow very large and sit directly against glacier edges. Meltwater lakes are not rare anymore. About 10 percent of...

Greenland Lakes Accelerating Glacier Flow Images available here A growing network of meltwater lakes at the edge of the Greenland ice sheet is accelerating the flow of major glaciers, potentially increasing the pace of global sea‑level rise. Warmer air and sea temperatures have led to the loss of around 264 gigatons of ice every year in Greenland since 2002 causing sea levels to rise by 0.8 millimeters annually. But a new study by the University of Leeds examining glacier behaviour across the entire ice sheet has highlighted a lesser‑known feature that is amplifying this mass loss - the freshwater lakes forming as the ice retreats. These ice-marginal lakes (or IMLs) sit right up against the edge of the ice and appear as glaciers pull back and expose deep, bowl‑shaped hollows in the landscape. Meltwater quickly pools in these basins to form lakes as large as 117 km2 in area. The study which is published today (1 April) in the journal Communications Earth and Environment shows that far from being passive features of the landscape, the lakes can destabilise the glaciers that feed into them, triggering movement, increasing thinning, and heightening ice loss. The researchers examined satellite data, using maps of ice-marginal lakes across Greenland and...
