We are extending the deadline to Feb 27, since we still have a few slots. 👉 A semi-informal event to interact with your peers, learn about cutting-edge research, and hear from two leaders in the field (Sophie Armitage & Dieter Ebert).
And it's free! 🎉
PIs, please recommend to your grad students!
Just a quick reminder that the abstract deadline is approaching for the DZG Graduate Meeting in Evolutionary Biology 2026: Feb 20! 👈
We still have a few places left 🤗🌈
Hi yes I will have more to say about this in a few hours but please enjoy this paper. It's been a huge labour of love and effort for the last four years, and a significant part of our research efforts, and I'm so so so thrilled it's finally ready to share.

My linocut portrait of Marie Maynard Daly in purples (she’s a young smiling Black woman, wearing earrings, a necklace and a dress, looking at the viewer over her shoulder). Above her to the right is an anatomical heart with a blowout diagram in a circle of a clogged artery and the cholesterol molecule all in red. Next to her on the left in blue are the molecules of the bases which make up DNA and a diagram of a human cell.
#BlackHistoryMonth is a great time to celebrate #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! 🧪🐡👩🏿🔬 #histsci She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the 🧵
To argue "infections" are an extrinsic factor to heritability is bizarre to me - as if aging takes place in a vacuum.
Infections are part of longevity. Infection resistance is heritable (e.g. AMP polymorphisms in mammals, insects).
I don't disagree longevity is highly heritable... 1/2
🔔HIRI has opened a new call to recruit Group Leaders. If you are interested in opening an RNA Biology and Infection lab, join us! Deadline: February 15. More info here 👇
Deadline for #SMBE2026 abstract submission is coming up (Feb 3)!

It's the annual meeting of the evolutionary biology section @dzg-evol.bsky.social of the German Zoological Society (DZG). Meeting language is English, we welcome participants from all countries and nationalities. Invited speakers are Sophie Armitage (Freie Uni Berlin) and Dieter Ebert (Uni Basel).
Please share: We are hosting the 2026 DZG evolutionary biology graduate meeting at Uni Hamburg on March 25-27: "Interactions and Coevolution: from Molecules to Species". #PhD students, early postdocs and advanced Master students in evolutionary biology are welcome to register! t1p.de/dzg2026evolbio
The human pangenome continues to grow and improve! Release 2 is here! Click through for the details, but this is a pretty amazing dataset including not just the phased assemblies, but PacBio HiFi, ONT Ultralong, Dovetail/Illumina Hi-C, PacBio Kinnex, and Illumina WGS for all samples

'Compared with the patients’ doctors, the AI model more often failed to detect the presence of disease in Black patients or women, as well in those 40yrs or younger. Wn the researchers looked at race and sex combined, Black women fell to the bottom, with the AI not detecting disease in half of them'

Looks great! Thanks for the explanation. Obviously, we are now curious what the selected locus is that drives this, and the ecological context. 😄 Looking forward to the preprint!
