Hallucinated citations are polluting the scientific literature. What can be done? Tens of thousands of publications from 2025 might include invalid references generated by AI, a Nature analysis suggests.

Call me old-fashioned, but I always look at a paper before I cite it

New in @science.org ‼️ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. 🔓 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

I have stage four cancer – there will be no cure, but death isn’t necessarily imminent: this is how it feels to live in the long middle When you are cured, the world cheers; when you are dying, it mourns. But when you are simply maintaining, the world is at a loss

This was beautifully thought provoking

‘They pushed so many lies about recycling’: the fight to stop big oil pumping billions more into plastics Plastic production has doubled over the last 20 years – and will likely double again. For author Beth Gardiner, metal water bottles and canvas tote bags are not the solution. So what is?

Trying to use less plastic?

Big Oil and the plastics industry are spending billions to make sure everyone else uses more.

“I think what stood out most is the deliberateness and intentionality over the years of pushing plastic into our lives,” said @bethgardiner.bsky.social. “It was such a shock."

Interesting conversation with someone recently who had been to a big ecology conference

They were amazed at the lack of a sense of urgency about the nature crisis

and that many of the studies presented - while often name-checking the crisis - were pursuing quite esoteric objectives
