Repost for #OwlishMonday
🦉talking more sense than many people...
Misericords provided some support for perching choristers; they could take the weight off their feet during long services but still look like they were standing, hence 'misericordia' from the Latin for mercy. It is thought that this carving was made by Claes de Bruyn, a master woodcarver working in the Southern Netherlands.
This barn owl decorates an oaken misericord, a little ledge found on the underside of hinged seats in choir stalls. Providing relief for religious rumps, they were often carved with impious figures. This carving is from Belgium c. 1441-1445 #OwlishMonday #medievalsky

Had seen no bluebells this year until walking by Natland Beck near Kendal - and there it was, tiny and tender on the damp, grassy bank 💙

This well known oil on canvas of a lilac clad young woman turning from a bowed figure in shadow symbolises the fragility of young love. Pink petals are fallen at her feet

Trethevy Quoit, near St Cleer in Cornwall, is a neolithic ‘dolmen’ burial chamber, so is quite old!
Well defined, concentric double rings and cups carvings on a sandstone outcrop on Tod Crag, near Ottercops Moss, Northumberland
Quite the boggy, marshy, hardy heather root and tussocky grass strewn hike to Tod Crag yesterday. In northern Britain, 'cup and ring mark' rock art falls within the 4000-1500 BC period. Definitely a venerable contender for #WeekOForOld #AlphabetChallenge #Northumberland #archaeosky
Excellent resource, thank you 🙏🏻
