Wine caps coming up in hardwood chips in a grow bag

Wine caps coming up in hardwood chips in a grow bag

The first wine caps of spring! Growing in a three layer bed of dirt , chips, and topped with straw. These almost got away from me before I found them. I usually harvest them as buttons

Perhaps a different kind of #gardening but a couple years ago I dedicated a planting bed and several grow bags to growing wine cap mushrooms and it’s been an overwhelming success. So much so that in season, spring and fall, I’m able to treat my #FungiFriends to fresh mushrooms!

An older specimen with edges curved inward. Growing in wood chips at the edge of a parking area. This one is making me doubt the identification.

There were a lot of of them in all stages of growth! Photo shows several light colored mushrooms growing in sparse grass.

How about some mulch maids? Possibly Leratiomyces percevalii. Of unknown edibility.

A Brown Argonaut (Argonauta hians) riding a translucent jellyfish. The argonaut has a spiral "shell" (actually an egg case) that is it wearing, and its mantle is in the egg case, and its arms are reaching back into the "shell." The shell has a wavy series of edges. The parts of the arms that are exposed have their suckers sticking out. Its mantle is sticking out on the left side. The argonaut has round silvery eyes, its body is white with purple chromatophores, and a beige shell. The jellyfish is clear and has frilly edges. The background is dark.

An amazing abundance of mica caps growing at the back of a dead tree. I couldn’t get them all in one shot!

There were even more little sparking golden caps bursting out of the of the ground. There were so many, it dislodged a clump of earth.

I have never ever EVER found so many mica caps, Coprinellus micaceus in one place. It was too bad it was in a nature park and I had to walk away with just pictures. They are one of my favorites to eat!

Photo of a round tuft of fluffy looking white lichen living among boulders. The lichen is actually soft when wet but hard and brittle when dry.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Identifying on iNaturalist: Get Started with Plants!. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar. At its core, iNaturalist is about people helping each other identify and learn about the organisms they observe, but did you know only about 10% of the iNaturalist community identifies observations…

Identifying observations for others is one of the most impactful things you can do on iNaturalist — and you don't need to be an expert to start.

Join us on March 19th (Taxonomy Day!) at 9am PT for a free webinar on how to help your fellow iNat community members: tr.ee/7Opp8zGkIQ

This blows my mind, I only knew of them from fossils and thought they were little static creatures like corals, not swimming around looking like lofted dandelion seeds!

Cat got your tongue?
They do look like little cats’ tongues. I hear you can make gummies out of them, but I’ve never found enough all at once to try.

Splitgill fungus (Schizophyllum commune) used medicinally for its potent immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties, primarily due to the polysaccharide schizophylland. Besides, it’s just so dang cute!
