Smuggling shadowed every China Navigation Co. voyage - bold, audacious, and woven into daily life. In the chaos of departure, 'pidgin' contraband slipped aboard: opium, alcohol, tobacco, textiles. Sailors looked away… or helped. #EYACrime Read more here: https://ow.ly/PqPy50Ysl2S

Profile view of Burgho's head and three-quarter view of Barnaby's head, over the caption "The Bloodhounds used in the trials.".
Two of our favourite #ArchiveAnimals are Burgho & Barnaby, a pair of bloodhounds loaned from a breeder by Commissioner Charles Warren during the Whitechapel Murders in 1888. He had them track him across Hyde Park as a demonstration, but towards the end of the chase one of them bit Warren! #Archive30
Detail from the bottom right hand corner of our 1908 WSPU certificate, showing Emmeline Pankhurst's signature, a golden heart, green stems, purple, gold and pink flowers, and a golden broad arrow surrounded by a laurel wreath. Possibly originating with the Sidney family, that arrow first appeared on British prison uniforms around the 1830s and was proudly adopted by the WSPU in reference to its activists' gaol spells. This certificate was awarded jointly to five women, including Florence Haig (cousin of the future Field Marshal Douglas Haig) and half-Hungarian Girton College graduate Maud Joachim.
The Women's Social and Political Union presented its members with artistic certificates for their hunger strikes, forced feeding and prison sentences. Examples are in @bradfordmuseums.bsky.social, public collections in Bath and Cumnock, and our own collections. #Archive30 #ColourfulArchives
A large and relatively thick ledger standing on a table. It is covered front, back and on both edges by cover or jacket in grey conservation grade cards, with two ribbon handles at the spine end to make it easier to get it off the shelf.
This impressive cardboard contraption was especially made by a conservator for our 19th century charge ledger from Beckenham Police Station.

A policeman in uniform and traditional policeman’s helmet stands by a square metal cabinet on a pole. A little door in the side is open, and he is talking into a telephone which he has taken from the cabinet. There is a small pull-down shelf where he has a notebook on which he is writing with a pencil.
This is PC Derek Smithurst using a police telephone box, in the Cornmarket, Derby c.1959. We particularly like the design feature of a little shelf for him to rest his notebook on while he takes down details.

A set of sixteen black and white photographs, one set of women and one set of men. The photographs show a side profile and straight on profile of each person's face. Each photograph is numbered and the next page against each reference number is a text recording the name, date of birth, physical description and summary of crimes of each person in photograph.
