Derbyshire’s countryside is full of wildlife wonders. This recording from 2013 features Steve Furness describing the unique flowers and animals along the River Derwent in Calver. Can you hear any in the background?

Today’s images were drawn by famous neurologist Sir William Gowers in his Children’s Journals. The scrapbook-type diaries depict family life and trips, dotted with sketches of animals and places they saw. More of Gowers work is available at Queen Square Archives tinyurl.com/y3epuxph

This fantastic image of men fishing with cormorants was taken in China by businessman George E Cormack, 1915. Cormorant fishing is a traditional method in which trained birds dive for fish, and it has a long, layered history across East Asia #EYAWildlife

A handwritten manuscript listing gardening expenses
One of the most important parts of the medieval Abbey was College Garden, which was used to grow food and medicinal herbs and was home to a fishpond and beehives. The gardener's expenses are recorded in these handwritten accounts in our archive.
