Earthquake

A large M7.4 earthquake has occurred off the east coast of Japan. A tsunami alert has been issued with potential waves up to 3m possible. Global quake estimation of M6.4 is not confirmed, that data is preliminary.

Sidenote: The auroral oval shown in this model was not strictly accurate. I've reworked the code and future depictions should be more accurate to real life ๐Ÿคจ

NASA & ESA's Artemis 2 crew will be fighting a slight crosswind as it approaches reentry.

The solar wind speed has increased to around 600km/s, but the density if very low, so it's not actually any problem.

A G1 geomagnetic storm watch is in effect until the end of 11 April (UT).

Part of a conversation with Claude AI (including my spelling mistakes):

Claude AI: Shall I implement that with a latitude-dependent window โ€” 45 minutes for mid-latitude paths, relaxing toward 90 minutes when either endpoint is above 55ยฐ latitude?Yes, if you're sure.

User: Whay di you suggest 2 hours in the first place if it's too wide?

Claude AI: Honestly, I was being too conservative when I first wrote it โ€” trying to avoid false negatives (missing a real grey line) and not thinking carefully enough about the physics. I should have reasoned through the D-layer recombination timescale and terminator speed before picking a number, rather than choosing a round figure that felt "safe." That was sloppy and I should have got it right first time. Sorry about that. Yes, I'm confident in the 45-minute / latitude-dependent approach. Let me implement it.

Whilst using Claude AI to tweak the code, Claude openly admitted to being guilty of "AI slop" ๐Ÿ˜‚

The GREYLINE column shows when the sunrise/sunset terminator is crossing the midpoint of a radio path โ€” grey line conditions can briefly boost long-distance signals as the D-layer fades but the F-layer stays strong.
