Rethinking field methods for species and scientists. April 16th 2pm ET. A green background with a globe under the text and other small snapshots of artistic seaweed and rocks
If you’re interested in learning more about intertidal biodiversity in #BostonHarbor AND about supporting disabled students & scholars through adaptation of field methods, I’ll be speaking on this for the Stone Living Lab’s seminar series on April 16th at 2pm! #disabledinSTEM

You can always use my photos! So happy to share with you and your learners!! :)
(I didn’t even notice the alt text haha!)
a handful of mature Semibalanus balanoides absolutely surrounded and partially smothered by 1000s of recent juvenile recruits
Teaching tomorrow and my slides from 2024 include this stunning shot from @aputnam.bsky.social showing the incredible eco-evolutionary force of #barnacle recruitment
One of my favorite photos! I love that you’re using it in class and your students get to see how dynamic recruitment can be!! But poor Chthamalus lol all those Semibalanus babies all over them!!
Thank you!! 🙏🏼 😊
Tomorrow & Wednesday is the virtual Northeast Regional Invasive Species and Climate Change (NERISCC) annual symposium! Free!! Join us for two half-days of invasive species & climate change talks, panels, & workshops! #invasivespecies #climatechange #NERISCC

Omg hahaha exactly right! Too funny!
A white/grey barnacle with thousands of cyprid barnacle babies covering the rock and on the adult barnacle
A memory from today, five years ago. Still one of my favorite photos. #marinelife #barnaclebabies #competition
Have any of your biologging devices ever failed? ⁉️
If so, we’d like to hear from you! 👂
Researchers at Acadia University, Nova Scotia, are investigating biologger device failure rates to help improve research practices. 🎓
The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete:

Were you so busy celebrating #PhycologyFriday that you maybe forgot to register for the upcoming Northeast Algal Symposium (NEAS)?!
Lucky you! The registration & abstract submission deadline has been extended to March 18! #NEAS2026 🧪

Seaweed farms enhance long-term carbon storage by altering ocean chemistry, increasing bicarbonate production in sediments and providing a durable method for atmospheric CO2 removal. doi.org/hbjbkx
Extending application deadline to early January so still time to get your applications in! #DisabledInSTEM
Reef oceans for all poster with five people listed as speakers
Next week REEF is hosting Oceans For All, Exploring Diverse Experiences in Marine Conservation panel. As a disabled scholar I’ll be bringing perspective on disability & accessibility in ocean/coastal science. Check out the other awesome panelists too! #disabledinstem us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

Working on a prez I’m giving @ Roger Williams about adapting field methods for better species detections & adapting field plans to be more inclusive of disabled scientists, & disability/accessibility in field work, while hooked up to IV infusion for my own (invisible)disability lol #disabledinSTEM

An upward view of a lush forest canopy with tall trees stretching toward the sky. The image shows numerous straight, tall tree trunks with textured bark and vibrant green foliage overhead. The trees appear to be mature hardwoods, creating a dense, natural cathedral-like ceiling of leaves. Text overlaid on the image reads "NATURE HEALS" and "Biodiversity supports mental health" in dark text. A smaller text block from the IPBES Nexus Assessment describes the relationship between nature and health. The IPBES logo appears in the top right corner. The photograph emphasizes the height and density of the forest, with sunlight filtering through the leaves creating a natural green glow throughout the scene.
It's #WorldMentalHealthDay 🌍
#DidYouKnow Healthy ecosystems support healthy minds?
IPBES #NexusAssessment confirms: biodiversity and functioning ecosystems improve mental health. Access to biodiverse environments facilitates recovery from stress, depression & other health-related conditions.🏡🧪
I was secretly hoping you might see my post and have an idea lol good suggestion ☺️. I will check my Mathieson book’s description of the cross section for that sp. Thank you!
Red algal cells
Red algae
Do any of my #algae friends have an idea on the ID of this? Smooth and slimy to touch. Def not Gracilaria sp. #phycologyfriday
I once came across a document (cant remember if it was a paper or ID book (online)) that shows the inside mouthparts of various marine annelids to be able to ID them. Anyone know it off the top of their head (or computer, have the file & want to share?)? I have students interested in worms!
This survey is closing soon, be sure to contribute this week if you haven’t yet already!
