Wonderland was where the pocket and birthday money of teenage me was exchanged for Airfix 1:72 scale models. A definite end of an era they are moving from Lothian Road but pleased they are relocating as one day I always intend to get back into models. www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/iconic-...

Two ancient Roman stone altars found near Edinburgh and acquired for the nation are set to go on public display for the first time as part of a new exhibition at the National Museums of Scotland (NMS). www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Here is a photograph of our #ArchivePast. It is our old searchroom back in the 1970s. We now have much better book supports and much comfier chairs. The whole room is a bit bigger. So a lot of improvements in 50 years.

Sad to see Braithwaite's tea and coffee shop has closed in Dundee. We used to buy Viennese Coffee mix from them. More recently we've been getting freshly roasted coffee beans from Empire State Coffee in Dundee (Whitehall Crescent) and Sacred Grounds in Arbroath. www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/business-...

“Thanks to the human heart by which we live,
Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears,
To me the meanest flower that blows can give,
Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.”
Ode: Intimations of Immortality, 1807, by William Wordsworth, born #OTD 1770.

No jokes here; Carl Sandburg really did once serve as the captain of the Lombard College basketball team, where he apparently gained a reputation for his throwing skills. He is seen in this 1898-1899 team photograph on the far left of the first row. We think it's time to bring back the uniforms!
Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was born on this day in 1853 in Zandert, The Netherlands.
A year after he had moved to Paris, Van Gogh painted this view featuring the popular Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières.

A mother cat sits in the window of a wooden shed, surrounded by four curious kittens crawling across an old blanket. She’s alert, as if she senses our presence, while the kittens tumble around without a care. 🐱

Young black woman in turquoise silk gown, with lace sleeves, lace cap, and fichu, double strands of pearls around her neck and her wrists. She is holding a white flower. in one hand, and a ribbon in the other. A tropical looking tree is behind her. She looks right at the viewer with an assessing look.
It is lovely that the Art Gallery of Ontario can now name the Black woman in the gorgeous #18thc portrait they acquired 6 yrs ago & also date the painting. It's from 1775. She is Eleonora Susette, enslaved by the Dutch governor of Guyana, accompanying his widow on her return to the Netherlands.

Two firefighters resting, sitting on the plinth of the "Citizen Firefighter" statue.
Quite an image on the BBC live page (www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cd...; no photographer credited).
Sounds as if they've saved the station and the hotel, and more importantly, without loss of life.
Citizens; heroes.
