Aloha! What’s unusual about the marbled godwits is that they are more beautiful when they are not breeding. Their stomach is a rich cinnamon and their overall plumage is richer in color. Strange. This was in November. 🪶

Doubling down on positivity amid <gestures widely> y'know.

Here are some recent lovely things: DR. Matt's defense, #Ornithology students' post-lifer-Northern Parula celebration, a #ChinkapinOak in full flower, and Nellie keeping watch over her family.

Sadly, drought and burn ban have limited us to mechanical heterogeneity so far this year.

My original 2000 #Sibley! The stains? That's Gray Catbird droppings from about 23 years ago –– all pokeweed purple at the time!

Title page of the book, signed by David Sibley ("To Rebecca - Good Birding!), with a little pen illustration of a singing starling, because I love them.

I'm not sure exactly when the book that changed my life entered our house - sometime in early 2001. Anyway, it's my 25th birdiversery! This guide was my constant companion for several years and came on every family trip. So much of who I am today is because I love birds, and that started here 🪶

The frontispiece of the current issue of The Wilson Journal of #Ornithology is this beautiful watercolor and gouache illustration of a juvenile and adult Rufous-thighed Kite by artist Carl Christian Tofte, inspired by a paper in the issue on this species' migration within South America.

A large, turkey-like bird walks across a lawn, its back to the camera. Its tail is black barred with cream; wings cinnamon barred with darker brown and slick with morning damp; neck and head black with small white spots, and a Mohawk creat in white, then black again. Its bill is black with a yellow tip.

The #birdoftheday theme today is #grounded, so how about this rather soggy female Great Curassow (Crax Rubra)? Arenal Observatory Lodge, Alajuela, Costa Rica, January 2026.

two men are standing next to each other with the date 1992 on the bottom ALT: two men are standing next to each other with the date 1992 on the bottom

A vile empire that is 5% of the world population, consumes 25% of it's resources while building more bombs and prisons than schools is not sustainable.

Epstein Class laughs as we fight over dwindling scraps and scapegoat each other.

We need truth and accountability resulting in reconciliation.

Truly grotesque human beings, obvious from the get-go.

As the creepy Christian head of the household or whatever in this patriarchal hellscape, Jim-Bob is the chief villain. But do NOT absolve Michelle. She is every bit as culpable.

Applying machine learning to identify unrecognized COVID-19 deaths recorded as other causes of death in the United States A machine learning approach suggests that COVID-19 deaths were undercounted unevenly across sociodemographic groups in 2020–2021.

A new study estimates that the number of deaths from COVID19 early in the pandemic was undercounted by more than 150,000 cases.

The undercount was most common among Black, Hispanic and Native Americans, as well as those with low household income.

Rand Paul:
“I just wonder if someone who applauds violence against their political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has struggled to accept limits to the proper use of force.”

The entire confirmation hearing in one sentence.
