Also ridiculously proud of this publication and its original research project, which was fantastic fun to work on. Thanks, @paolaruffo.bsky.social and Xiaochun! #PhDlife #PhDsupervision

My heart breaks for all the amazing staff whose jobs are at risk, and for all the kids who dream of working with languages the same way I did all those years ago and won't be able to do so because of the ignorance and failures of university management.
Heriot-Watt University is where my dream came true, and where I learned to reflect on what studying languages really means, and what we stand to lose when we equate the click of a button with the richness of human diversity. Sign the petition to save LINCS here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
There's a reason why the word family comes up every time I talk about the University of Essex. The staff there have changed my life and taught me much more than translation skills. It's where the idea for my PhD was born. You can sign the petition here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
The University of Leicester is where I fell in love with Old English and where I taught Italian for the first time 12 years ago. It's also where I met people from all over the world who would change my life forever. Sign the petition here: www.change.org/p/save-moder...
I have sadly become accustomed to signing petitions to save language departments at risk of closure in the UK. The three petitions I am about to share hurt a bit more, though, because all three of these institutions have been instrumental in shaping the person and scholar I am today.
Thrilled to see this article out! Working on the research project and the publication with @paolaruffo.bsky.social and Xiaochun Zhang was a joy. #translationstudies #phdlife
New paper out! ๐ฅณ "Co-authorship by PhD students and their supervisors: implications for translation studies" is now available in The Interpreter and Translator Trainer. Incredibly proud of this one, co-authored with @carolosullivan.bsky.social and Xiaochun Zhang. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Annelise Finegan and Jen Calleja on stage at the Edinburgh International Book Festival
A hand holding the book 'Fair' by Jen Calleja with the sea in the background.
Finally managed to attend the Edinburgh International Book Festival today! Loved hearing Annelise Finegan and @jencalleja.bsky.social talk about their experiences of literary translation. Time to dive into "Fair" now! ๐
Cutting modern language degrees at universities is creating a โvicious cycleโ and risks contributing to the continued decline of foreign language learning among children in the UK, it has been warned. @patrickjack.bsky.social reports

Full house at #CTT2025 at #MTSUMMIT2025 for the paper with Lieve Macken and @paolaruffo.bsky.social on translation difficulties in different workflows in literary translation ๐คฉ
It's time for the first session of the workshop! Lieve Macken is presenting on the role of different literary translation workflows in overcoming translation difficulties @jdaems.bsky.social @paolaruffo.bsky.social

FUCKING FINALLY YEAH MAN THANK YOU KINGS COLLEGE www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Important new report published today from the University of St Andrews: "The University of St Andrews and the Legacies of Empire, 1700-1900" - looks like a really thorough and well researched piece of vital work. Thanks to the researchers. zenodo.org/records/1497...

The situation of #ModernLanguage programmes in the UK continues to worsen.
Cardiff University has recently announced plans to cut 400 members of staff and programmes, including modern languages, nursing and music.

I've been pondering the discrepancy between perceived success and financial precarity as a literary translator. People come up to me and say, "Wow, you're doing so well! You won a big prize! It's wonderful to see you so successful!" At which point I freeze awkwardly. Um, define success? ->

As part of the DUAL-T project, 24 professional literary translators were asked to translate 3 short stories (EN>NL) using MS Word, Trados Studio 2022, and a proprietary #MTPE platform. This article compares measured and perceived temporal, technical, and cognitive effort across the three workflows.
